Broke another Weaver scope

I've had two scopes fail in the last 38 years and both of them were Weavers. The first one was a 3-9X weaver that I bought new in 1975 for $29. After about 30 years and roughly 10,000 shots mounted on my Remington 308 the internal coating peeled off and filled the scope with black snow.

Today I pulled a Weaver V16 out of the safe to mount on my Ruger No 1 for some load testing and when I looked through the scope I found that the wire reticle coming from the top of the scope was broken. This scope has fine wire reticle with 1/4 minute dot mounted on it. It was last mounted on my 22.250 and was fine when I put it away a year or so ago. The scope has been laying on the top shelf of my safe wrapped in bubble wrap so I don't understand how it could have broken.

I sent an email to Weaver and we'll see how their customer service works.

I had a very old weaver K4 fail a few years ago due to moisture intrusion and internal fogging. I'm curious about your thoughts on weaver and if you think this is an anomaly or what.

We have a old weaver 1-3 on a browning 375 that has slung mud, snow and rain. Its still ticking away. And its been used.

They don't service the very very old ones however there are a few small companies out there that work on old weavers/USA redfields etc.

if it has a aluminum body they will fix or replace it if it is steel your out of luck

It's a fairly new aluminum model bought less than 5 years ago. Weaver just told me to ship it to them and they would fix it. I got it to UPS this afternoon so we'll see what their turnaround time is.

Any old scope will eventually fail just because the rubber seals get old and stiff. You see more Weaver failures because there were so many of them made and they are old.

I have had pretty good luck with their customer service.Within a month usually for repair.Broken reticles on 2 of the modern Classic models and a turret on a Super Slam.I like Weavers.
On the other hand I got my Leupold Mark 4 8.5-25 back last month after a 3 week turn around.Some things inside had fallen apart and were dancing around on the lense and other stuff was stuck on the inside of the lense.I still like them also.

Had a redfield 4x rebuilt a few years ago.. ok alot of years ago...with a german #6
a year ago last nov was sitting in the blind in colorado.. well below 0 all day..
next day (after having the scope in the hotel room over night - was in the blind and at the afternoon hunt.. when the weather cleared and the sun started shining...pulled the browning hi wall 45-70 out of the blind and looked through the scope...dang if the lower duplex portion of the cross hair had taken a 7 o'clock position...
