How to make your own kill flash for free! (if your a mechanic or know one)

Hello fellow calgunners! I recently came up with an idea that I'd like to share with all of you If you are a car mechanic (or know one) Then you should be able to get your hands on a free killflash...There is a unit in certain newer cars called a "mass airflow indicator" and that is what you will want. If you can, try to find a used one that has been taken out of a car and would be thrown out otherwise. Take the screen out, cut it to the proper size, spray paint flat black, and you're done

    This is the finished "product"

They are usually made out of aluminum so I would use a disposable razor-blade to cut it as you may dull your fancy knife.

When you're done cutting it smaller, round the edges until it fits snug in your lens cap.

Push it into your lens cap (duh)

Slide it on the end of your scope and you're done! (Note, make sure you cut it big enough so it fits very SNUG in your lens cap, this will prevent it from coming too close to your glass!)

There is no visible light loss I can detect at all, still bright and clear with no picture loss

I have never seen anything like that on any cars I work on. But if it is what i think it is, removing it is a BIG NO NO !! Would you please inform us as to what type of vehicle it came from?

This is the unit, and I stated that you would only want to remove the screen if you replaced the whole unit and was going to throw away the old one (you take the screen out of the old one) I guess i didn't word it clearly enough...my bad

        Very cool idea.
Not sure outside of a combat zone that it would be usefull but still pretty neat.
Mall Ninjas should eat this up.

          Thank you
True, but it was free so I figured why not?
Wouldn't doubt it, it also serves as a glass protector when your scope covers are open I guess haha

Yeah, pretty clear, but I'm no literature expert.
It was not a threat. It was an exaggerated response to an uncompromising stance. I was taught never to make a threat unless you are prepared to carry it out and I am not a fan of carrying anything. Even watching other people carrying things makes me uncomfortable. Mainly because of the possibility they may ask me to help.

Nope, you were plenty clear, I missed it, sorry.

That is called a Hydrocarbon Trap. It is used to soak up any fuel vapors after the car is shut off to help stop photochemical smog. It is illegal to remove them from a vehicle, unless as you stated, you are replacing that item. Neet idea, how strong is that stuff, would recoil cause it fall apart? Any idea what vehicle it's from?

                  No, its not.

It is the screen from a MAF (mass air flow) sensor that is in the intake pipe of many cars. It is made of thin aluminum in a honeycomb pattern with no coatings of any kind. It's purpose in life is to straighten and smooth the airflow before flowing past the MAF sensor's vital bits to give the ECM a more accurate signal.

@Cuda440 Thanks for explaining, you are correct on all accounts

@finyllw It should withstand the recoil of any kind of gun ranging from .22 to 20mm as long as the scope cap stays in place Also, the picture that I used as an example came out of a volvo I also think 2003? and up honda civics have it but thats just a guess...there are too many cars to list that have one.

cool concept. if you don't have car parts to take apart, you can find honeycomb sheets online and there are quite a few manufacturers that make it in materials ranging from aluminum to polycarbonate. looks like they only cater to large orders.

+1 on the protective factor. Kill flashes are great for night shooting. Great idea OP!

You'll find that in front of almost every MAF sensor installed on a GM vehicle.
