Hey guys I picked up some troy sights yesterday for my ar build. I was thinking about getting a red dot sight like the sight mark or primary arms. Question I have is there any advantage to having both? Would they be useless together? The sight mark has a quick release function. With a red dot would I need a magnifier? This is my first build, just trying to figure out what I need or should get. The ar has a 16" barrel. Thanks

Because it REALLY sucks getting to the range with only a red dot and realizing your battery is dead or the thing wont turn on.
Plus, you gain life XP for getting 1 MOA groups with iron sights at 100 yards... just sayin'.tere hanges -
I have iron sights and a red dot. I keep the irons down though. A magnifier is good when shooting out past 100 yards. I have an Aimpoint 3X magnifier that works great. I use the twist mount with it so that I can just take it off whenever I want.Comment

I'm in a similar situation to you... my first AR, got some Troy BUIS for it. Those aren't cheap... at that point it would be a third of the way to the Eotech I want in the future. As soon as my HK sells maybe :P
I figured I should get good with the iron sights first? I've used a red dot sight before and it's so easy to use. Just shooting for fun so maybe I should develop actual shooting (sighting/aiming) skill.
Or should I just go ahead and get the Eotech?
Let me know what you end up doing!Comment

Just depends on your RD/Holo sight...
These days most of us will choose to shoot with a electronic sight, in that case your probably only gonna use your BUIS when your co-witnessing your RD/HW, or as previously stated if your battery or optic happens to crap out. I have gone the cheap and expensive routes with the RD's. Aimpoints are expensive, but if your looking for something to put on a weapon and turn on and forget, it's tough to beat their reliability and exceptional battery life. Turn them on and don't worry about it for a few years. Buy once, cry once. Eotech's are also great for people who prefer a larger reticle (I like them for CQE.) I have had good luck with with my Vortex SPARC and Strikefire's, but their battery life doesn't compare with my Aimpoint's.
Just one internet fools suggestion, but I would really recommend spending some time shooting with your BUIS regardless of your RD choice. It's a great skill to have, and as was previously stated if you shelled out the good money for a nice set you should know where they place from your weapon out past 50/100yds. Electronic sights have a nasty habit of failing at the worst times and it is sure nice to have a set of BUIS to flip up when you need to make that crucial shot.Comment
