    holographic help

ok i am going to buy a holo sight and i am a newb to holo's, I have always used traditional sights. My (stupid)question is how do you sight them in? the hologram moves throughout the viewing area. What reference on the viewing glass shows you when you are lined up with the target?
    thanks

That's kind of the idea behind a red dot or a holographic sight, is that there is nothing to line up, just put the dot on your target and shoot. There is windage and elevation adjustments on the sight to zero it in. Once it is zeroed you should be good to go!

One of the coolest ways to dial in a red dot sight is with a laser bore sight.

You pop the laser in the chamber and find a nice reflective target, that won't get the neighbors excited, at either 25 or 200 yards.

Turn on the red dot. Look through the sight and see if you can see two dots. If you only see one, take the laser out and go have a beer, you are done.

If you see two, move the red dot over the other red dot and take the laser out, you are done. Go have a beer. Total time five minutes.

You can also "lollypop it" to get it close, if your iron sights are zeroed. Settle in, get a good sight picture on your target and then move the the red dot using your windage and elevation knobs until it sits on the top of the front sight post.

This down and dirty zero, will get you close, but should not be relied upon for more than that. After doing this switch to the range and shooting position you anticipate shooting through your holographic sight (for me this is kneeling and 50 yards, as opposed to prone at 25) and zero from there. I usually have to come down quite a bit.

It is much faster to use a bore sight, but even then I'd recommend confirming the zero with some live rounds. Not all bore sights are created equal...

Easiest thing to do without a bore sight indeed.

Also, remember that you zero the sight by adjusting bullet impacts on paper. So if you you are hitting low right of your aiming point, you adjust the sight up and left. Just like a riflescope.
