I would look at the Vortex Diamondback series...

I was in the same boat a long time ago and came to the conclusion that was the best I would find in that general price range. I did compare that directly with the Redfield and Nikon at the time.

Read this.. Might give you a little more insight if you can’t find all the scopes for comparison locally...

Get the Redfield made by Leupold and you have the Leupold warr if you ever need it. They are very good scopes

Vortex customer support as just as good if not better…

He should pick a scope based on what he sees is the best value and quality.

Personally after using the Redfield vs Vortex he would be a fool not to consider the alternate, even if it cost a few bucks more.

Now, I own a vortex and a leupold. I've never had to call either for problems. But I have called Leupold for upgrades (custom shop) and I have a really hard time imagining that vortex can compete with leupold.

Not saying it isn't the case. But if it is, and companies like Nikon, Vortex, and Sightron can match Leupold in customer service? (IF the can?) Holy smokes what an industry. Every other industry on the planet could learn alot from these guys!

                      (Leupold = amazing customer service)

And OP, since you are asking about PRODUCT specifically, I owned a Nikon too, and here are my thoughts:

I'm comparing a budget nikon with a budget leupold. My understanding is if you get the Redfield made in OR it's coming off the ame line as leupold. I will assume until I am told otherwise that you are buying leupold quality.

                        My thoughts:

The Nikon reticle material is better. Reflective in the dark.
The Leupold is better in every other possible way.
The Nikon would have been "not bad at all" except mine wasn't even close to advertised eye relief. It was about 3 finger widths of eye relief from the ocular to my eye brow. About half what they said it would be.

Pretty simple actually. The Redfield woud find its way higher on my list (ASSUMING your model is made in OR. If Chinese, then I would buy the Nikon)

My experience with Vortex is with the more midline stuff. It's better. And it had better be, for double the cost! I can't speak to entry level Vortex stuff. It's probably great too, I just don't know how much incrementally better or less good it is compared to the Nikon and Leupold products of the same money.

In that range I think you would be very happy with the Redfield. Pretty sure you're looking at the Revolution, and thats the way to go because that scope is made HERE in the US. The revnege line is overseas. I've used the revolutions on 22's and 223's so far and have very much liked the qulaity for price paid. Even was quite impressed with the erector housing and that for a scope of that price it shot a box easily.

Ive used Nikon on many of my rifles and also have very good things to say, but that redfield is a diamond in the rough. As for CS, Leupold, Nikon, Vortex, all high ranking. Sometimes you get the one person on the phone whogets on your nerves but there is alwasy someone here on the forum to reach out to to expedite things.

I've got a Nikon Buckmaster and a Redfield Revolution. Both are nice scopes, but I'd take the Nikon over the Redfield if I had to make a choice. The brightness and clarity is amazing. Right now Cabelas has a deal on Buckmasters (Some kind of rebate or discount). I'd check into that.
