i just purchased a new rifle. i'm new to long range shooting. planning on using it for target shooting as well as hunting, what would be a reasonable scope for 600-800 yards. looking to spend less than $400.

Your price range is going to really limit your options if you want some good glass.

My recommendation would be one of the SWFA fixed magnification scopes.

I’m sure someone will also recommend the Bushnell fixed 10X Tactical Elite. Personally I like the SWFA a little more, larger main tube and a slightly larger objective, and I like the reticle in the SWFA. Both will get the job done, and both are in your price range.

SWFA also offer fixed scopes in higher magnifications.

I like the Nikon Buckmaster. Remember that scope rings and/or a 20 MOA base will cost you too.

What is your honest opinion on the optical clarity of this scope and its tracking performance when compared to something like the SWFA SS FFP or Vortex PST FFP scopes? I know it might be a bit of an unfair comparison given the cost difference, but I am using them a reference point.

Even I am tempted to try one from a price standpoint. It looks good on paper; unfortunately I have not come across anyone who actually owns one yet.

About as clear as my SS There are a few reviews on CG and one above. It tracks true that is the most important thing.

Like I said for the money its hard to beat. I have been shooting one for a while and love the fact that my Mill dot BDC stays the same at any X. It's clear and very accurate.

I hunt with both a 20X and 16X SS scope. As long as you practice/shoot long range and become proficient then you will love these scopes. I important part of the practice is to find your natural point of aim. With high powered scopes you can easily get lost trying to find the animal. I mostly use these for Antelope where the distances can be long (500+ yards) but the cover is sparse in Wyoming.
