Red dot help

I just recently put a Vortex red dot on my AR. I like it and I'm pretty accurate with it. My problem is that the dot is too big and not a definite circle. At 25 yards it covers the whole 4 inch target. Now is this because I went a cheaper route? Is the aimpoint much better. Should I save up for an ACOG? I want a finer dot that is useful at 100 yards at least. Any suggestions?

The Dot is 2 MOA. Thats 2 inches at 100 yards and half an inch at 25 yards. That is the same as the 2 MOA aimpoint. If you are looking for more precise shooting then a red dot might not be what you want.

Use the top of the dot instead of center

Turn the brightness down as far as possible to keep the dot visible. This will shrink its perceived size. But, remember that a red dot is built for speed not precision.

Poor diode quality, or you have Astigmatism. Use a BUIS and look through the smallest peep sight at the dot. Does the dot shrink? If so, its your eyes.

If the dot covers a 4" circle at 25 yards...that's a 16MOA dot. Only shotguns need a dot that big and they are only available on C-more Systems. Either that Vortex is crap, or your eyes are. 1inch = 1 MOA as seen at 100 yards.

Look at my C-more in this link. HERE That is a 4 MOA dot. It will cover a 4" circle as seen from 100 yards away. I had a 2MOA dot in it but I swapped it out for a 4 for close range work.

Aimpoints are much better than a Vortex...as long as its not your eyes. An ACOG will be worse for you since they do not use traditional dots. They are better quality, you just have to get used to a triangle or a crosshair type aiming point.

Well you are right on the money. Its my eye. With the BUIS up the dot got smaller and more defined. Maybe this is why I'm so off with my Glocks. Does the ACOG's aiming style help me or would i be wasting my time. With the Vortex Im still getting quarter sized groups at 25 yards. It just takes some guess work. If I run it with the BUIS will i get more accuracy?

A trijicon relex with the amber triangle will help you if it doesnt get washed out. Buy the sunshade to help stop this. Your eyes will see the triangle as a triangle and not bloom it.

Check the ACOG review a few post down for good info on those. Your eyes will not play tricks on you with a magnified optic.

In my old age diabetes is playing tricks with my eyes. This is one reason o went with a C-MORE. Sometimes my eyes were like a hawk, so I just looked over the BUIS at the dot. When the dot turned into a rose or star, i just used the small peep to control my focus. You can do this with any RDS & BUIS.
