4 MOA dot for an Aimpoint.

Is it difficult to hit say a 12" steel plate at 300 yards with a 4 moa dot in an aimpoint? At that range 4 moa is about 12 right? So it would cover the entire plate? I am looking to get into 3 gun and the place where I would shoot doesnt shoot farther than 300 yds during matches. I was looking to go with the Aimpoint ML2 but If I spend a little more i can get the ML3 and get a 1 moa dot. (you cant get the ml2 with a 1 moa dot can you? if so where?) Another option is to just get the 4 moa dot and use my iron sights for the longer range stuff. I do just fine at 300 yards with my irons.

You probably would have to put the dot right on top of the plate, unless you zero @ 300 (or 25).

I figure there would be a hold over but what I am wondering is if the dot is so big that it will obscure the target so much that it would make it difficult to aim at something precisely at 300 yds. Although, like you were saying, there would be a hold over so the dot would most likely not obscure anything because the target would be below the dot.

        10" drop for AE223 if you zero @ 100yds.

So, theoretically, if you put ur dot right above the 12" plate, you should be able to hit it.

Now, why do you prefer an Aimpoint over an EOtech?

You can hit plates at 300 yards with a 4MOA Aimpoint, you have to hold over anyways so the dot doesn't actually cover up anything.

It depends on the course though, if your shooting more targets at extended ranges might want to look into a 1-4x powered scope as they are much more versatile than an Aimpoint.

Mine is setup for general purpuse/HD use so the Aimpoint does just fine. But putting it up in a 3 gun course I'd shell out for a 1-4x right away.

I have an a2 upper and I already have the mounts for it. Plus an aimpoint is a little cheaper. Plus I like the look of an aimpoint better, lol.

It's not that hard to do... even if you did zero at 300yds with your 12" sized dot you'd just center it on the target -- like you do when shooting a pistol at 25yds.
