    Scope/Sights 30-30 336 Marlin

When I got my 336 Marlin I made the rookie mistake of getting an overpowered scope. It is just a Centerpoint 4x16x40. It is fine at a bench rest, but too easy to get scope eye when I am standing, and too much time to acquire targets beyond 100 yrds. As I am getting a 10/22 I am thinking of sticking it on that for plinking/varming hunting.

Unfortunately the factory sights on the 336 are crap (it was a Remlin, though the barrell is stamped New Haven, CT). The front sight doesn't stay on, and fell off after the first time I shot. The screw is too short. Could just replace the screw, but I would still like better sights. Problem is a limited budget.

For a budget of $100 what would be better. Getting some peep/ghost ring sights, or getting a scout rail and extended eye relief scope (3x or even 4x fixed). I would like both with a quick release on the scope, but budget wise not doable. I am leaning to peep sights, only because with the rail and scope, I am thinking I would get crummy quality for my budget and might be better waiting for when I have more money. Is there a decent set up with one or the other that is within my budget?

If there is an option that is notably better in quality for a little over my budget, I would be willing to entertain that. No reason to save a few dollars and get a notably inferior product.

Figure a 170 grain 30-30 is a 250 yard gun, with zero at 30 and 200 yards. Most any good quality 4x will work with solid mounts. That gives you a 10" window with +4" at 120 yards and -6" at 250 yards.

Id look at something in the 2-7 range. A extended eye relief combined with the x's rail is about perfect IMO.

Here you go this would be perfect because you can zoom in and out from 1x for fast acquisition all the way out to 4x for further shots. Also check out the reviews they are good to go.

Thanks for the suggestions. The primary arms is a no go. Want a scout scope if I go with a scope.

Here is a problem. I thought of shelling out the extra $50 and get the Lever Rail from XS that comes with sights. But apparently it requires two screws for the XS front sight. Mine is tapped for only one (apparently this was a change starting in 2009, stupid idea by Remington). I could just get the scout mount from XS, and buy separately a peep sight (maybe a Skinner, maybe XS backup ones), but I still need a front sight, or to restore my factory front sight.

This may sound like a stupid question, but where could I get a replacement screw of the right length to re-attach the front sight?
