When I got my 336 Marlin I made the rookie mistake of getting an overpowered scope. It is just a Centerpoint 4x16x40. It is fine at a bench rest, but too easy to get scope eye when I am standing, and too much time to acquire targets beyond 100 yrds. As I am getting a 10/22 I am thinking of sticking it on that for plinking/varming hunting.
Unfortunately the factory sights on the 336 are crap (it was a Remlin, though the barrell is stamped New Haven, CT). The front sight doesn't stay on, and fell off after the first time I shot. The screw is too short. Could just replace the screw, but I would still like better sights. Problem is a limited budget.
For a budget of $100 what would be better. Getting some peep/ghost ring sights, or getting a scout rail and extended eye relief scope (3x or even 4x fixed). I would like both with a quick release on the scope, but budget wise not doable. I am leaning to peep sights, only because with the rail and scope, I am thinking I would get crummy quality for my budget and might be better waiting for when I have more money. Is there a decent set up with one or the other that is within my budget?
If there is an option that is notably better in quality for a little over my budget, I would be willing to entertain that. No reason to save a few dollars and get a notably inferior product.
