A question of General Purpose optics

Right now, my only AR is a 20" Armalite with a Burris Tac30 1-4. I find the scope is heavy, and the battery being turned on accidently from time to time bothers me. I'd like to upgrade, and looking for an optic within the 1k range. I have dealer pricing for some of the larger brand optics, and I'm looking at a Trijicon TA33g-h. I've seen the horseshoe reticle in person, and liked it, but haven't seen any others from Trijicon. I'm just looking for the most utility in the least weight, with durability.

What are your thoughts? I'm open to other Trijicons, but I'd at least like to narrow down it down to a manufacturer if at all possible.

Check out my review on the 3 most popular ACOG's: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=654467

ACOG's are great and I certainly wouldnt send you looking somewhere else, and most likely neither will most other people here turn you away from Trijicon. But I'd first ask you: What type of shooting do you do most? What type of rifle setup do you have? It could be that a 1-4x/6x would do you just as well, if not better. I think for the price, you'll be hard pressed to find better glass than an ACOG.....maybe a good comparison is a Vortex Razor HD 1-6x, but that is a heavier scope and in my humble opinion, has a bad reticle.

I think you're heading the right direction in brand. But the bigger and harder question remains: Which ACOG will suit you best? Best to look at them in person.

I read and really liked your review of the acogs. I mostly do bench shooting with my AR from 100 to 400 yards, as it is. The 1x to 4x Burris I have is nice, but heavy. I'm looking to scale it down, and find an optic I can take to the range, or use in a carbine course once I'm finally able to take one. It's my only semi-auto rifle, so it's pretty much my only SHTF rifle. I was leaning to the TA31 for capability, but wanted a bit more eye relief, and wanted something lighter than the TA11, so I was in the TA33 camp so far.

Thanks for the compliment on the review.

My own personal opinion is that if you are mainly shooting beyond 100 and often out to 400, yet want more eye relief, is that you would be best served with the TA11. I am nearly positive that, although the TA33 is still a great scope, it wouldn't be the best option for your shooting style. It can certainly be used for ranges longer than 400 yards, but it's best use role is, I believe, inside of 200 yards and better at 100 or less.

I think you'd find that the weight of the TA11 isn't bad if you have your rifle configured properly for an even weight distribution. A lightweight barrel will do wonders for this. But still, we're talking a 6 ounce difference.....noticeable yes, but certainly not drastic.

Unless you're runnin and gunnin, I'd seriously consider the TA11 over the TA33 in your case. Of course, let your eyes do the talking, not what I say
