Looking for good entry level mil dot scope

I want to get into using mil dots for hunting applications. I have a barska swat6-24x60mm scope that has mil dots but is much too big for hunting applications. I have used it successfully for long rang varminting on my .17 hmr but it is much too cumbersome for any woodland application.

Im specifically looking for a compact mil dot scope priced no more than $200 just to get used to mil dots. I like kentucky wind doping so i figured mil dots would be the way to go over normal crosshairs. I want sominething with a fixed magnification in the 4x-10x range that can shoot out to 350 yards. This is going to be used on an alexander arms .17hmr AR that im in the process of building and acquiring accessories for. I regularly take small game out to 300 yards with my bolt action .17 hmr so i need a scope thats capable of this kind of distance.

    Thanks in advance

    Got one of these: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/962...-reticle-matte

$149 shipped and shoots great! I put it on my M1A and zeroed it for 300 meters (pigs) which means I can hold two mils low for chickens (200 meters) two mils high for turkeys (385 meters) and five mils high for rams (500 meters) -- great fun. The scope can be set to zero and has side parallax adjustment. For the price, great glass!

Nice scooe but it wayyy to big for what i am to be using it for. I need something the size of this or smaller:

I need it to be lightweight and be able to hold its zero. Thats the biggest problem i find with the scopes i buy

I have been impressed with Nikon for the optical clarity

Maybe something like this on the used market

Snipers hide forum has a decent listing of used optics

I love nikon scopes. I use a prostaff on my .17 hmr and .243 when woodland hunting or shooting at the range. That scope is still a bit too big for what i need. Im looking for a compact riflescope like the dedicated AR style ones.

                Exactly what I was thinking.

Look, you aren't going to get a good compact scope in your price range. It's like asking for a ten thousand dollar car to do zero to sixty in under four seconds. But, you can buy a motorcycle that can do that for the same cash.

I concur that is a nice entry level mildot. Makes everything simple too.

Take a look at the newer Sightmark 2.5-10X32 Mil Dot. I have 2 of these. One is on a 16" AR308, the other is on an SPR based rifle in 5.56. I used to run the Bushnell 10X40 Mil Dot scopes on a few builds, but gradually replaced them all. Comparing side by side against the Bushnell, the Sightmark has brighter and clearer glass. It also has an etched reticle instead of the wire reticle in the Bushnell. I had issues with the reticle flaring out in the Bushnell scopes in certain lighting conditions due to the reflective nature of it's copper surface. The Sightmark has similar tracking to the Bushnell (Not perfect, but decent with no surprises and holds zero without issue). The 30mm tube on the Sightmark also gives it a lot more internal travel than the Bushnell 10X at around 130 MOA of elevation on the Sightmark vs about 75-80 MOA for the Bushnell.

I like that sighmark but it seems to be a bit put of my price range for now. Im thinking of just getting a cheapo ncstar to hold me over until i can save up the money to purchase a $500-$600 scope for the .17hmr ar. Ive seen some pretty nice looking scopes with the small objective lense. The one by bushnell an the nighforce ones are catching my eye.

You can check out the Primary Arms 4-14x illuminated mill dot scope. It should fill your needs for now.

                              "Good" - "Entry Level" - "Mil-Dot"- ?

They do not come in at under $200, unless you consider current after-sale rebates from Bushnell. Go with the Bushnell ET1040 MIL-MIL. If the Sightmark is available in MIL-MIL, then I'd say it's worth a look as well, considering FMJBT's good review (I don't like mixing MIL-MOA, because "dope math" in the field is hard enough without conversions!)
