Need help with scope mount height.

Hello all,

Man my head is goin to explode! I've been searching and searching but can not figure out what scope mout height I need. I have a tikka t3 light ss in .308. My scope is a vortex viper pst 4-16x50. Objective bell is 2.26" Od. The tube is 30mm. I was looking at the DNZ mount in hight mount. Or going with egw rail with 20moa and the practical rings (really want the 20 moa base for the long range shots).

Dnz says medium might fit most 50mm's, egw says with rail and practical mount no bigger then 56mm objective! These two measurements are not Od. Any help would be much appreciated!

Lately, on average of about 1 per day, I have seen quite a few posts (mostly from newbies) regarding questions about what ring height should be used. They usually request pics for comparison. For all new guys, there is a systematic way of calculating ring height that doesn't require more than a simple elementary school ruler. You measure 3 things:
1. the height of the front of your base/rail from the barrel
2. the height of your rings from the top of the rail to centerline
3. the outside diameter of the bell of the scope (not the size of the objective lens)

Here is the equation:
[rail height + ring height] - [bell diameter x 0.5]
If the value is positive, then your bell will clear the barrel. Optimally, you want that bell to be about 1/4" or less over the barrel. This will give you a tight cheek weld and provide for more precise trajectory. Be sure to account for Butler Creek caps if you intend on using them.

If you are using a 40mm objective, then you can use the lowest rings and bases available, as the bell will certainly clear the barrel with no problem. i.e. don't worry if the bell ends up being higher than 1/4" over the barrel.

Normal Weaver rings are measured from the top of the Weaver rail to the bottom of the scope tube. To figure out the ring height I take the bell diameter (2.26") subtract the diameter of the scope's tube (1.18") and divide by 2, then subtract the height of the rail. That get's you the minimum height from the top of the rail to bottom of the scope tube.

DNZ does it differently and lists the Game Reapers's height by scope centerline (1/2 the bell diameter) so it looks like you'll want a high mount if you do DNZ.

DNZ mounts look good on a Tikka but so does a Weaver rail or Talley LW. The problem with DNZ is the distance between the rings is fixed and may not work well with every scope. For your purpose I'd probably go with the rail.

Thanks guys! It was exactly wha I was looking for! Found the trick with the pennies under the scope! Ill be going with the egw 20 moa rail with their practical mounts. From the calculations that were given to me I came up with .266 clearance. I will still double check with the pennies though to be 100% sure.
