    Question about zeroing scope!

So, I recently acquired a win model 70 30-06, and it came with a bushnell sportview. The rifle is about 45 years old and I don't know how old the scope is. The base of one weaver ring was really off kilter, the locking lug was not centered through the base and looked to my untrained eye to be off. Now my question is , should I be resetting the Windage and height to factory before attempting to zero? I am still waiting for my new rings, and will attempt to bore sight it the old fashioned way when I get them... If the guy was really using the scope with that ring like that, I am guessing his Windage was insane!

Looks like you need new rings.

For sure, I just ordered some weaver quad lock medium rings. I looked at the Windage and it seems he had it set to shoot like four inches to the left to compensate. Now when I get my new rings and assuming the scope lines up with the barrel, I should return the settings on the scope to factory settings right! Cheers

Center them up and start over with sighting it in. If you shoot at 25 yard to get centered on paper it will make it much easier to do final adjustments at 100 yards. The last scope I did took 4 shots to zero it in that way. The next 3 went into the same hole at 100 yards 2.5" above the bullseye which is right where I wanted it.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Thanks. So I picked up a trick from another forum that seems to make sense, but I won't be shooting until next week. They said to place a mirror on my workbench and place the scope objective down on the mirror. I will see a double image of the crosshairs, and adjust knobs accordingly until the crosshairs superimpose... I tried that and centered them up, so I am hoping to be able to sight it in when I shoot without too much problem. Still waiting on my new rings, then I'll bore sight it cheers
