The scope that came with my savage 30-06 is a cheap scope, and i'm looking to get a nicer scope for my rifle. what I want out of the scope is Clarity, reliability, and to hold a zero even if i drop it on cement. My price range is 200-500. A mil-dot reticle would be nice but not necessary, I would be using it for hunting pig and deer so a 3-9 or 4-12 would work nicely. any recommendations?

Leupold 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 new or used and you will never look back unhappy. IF you want one for less a Redfield will also do well. They are made by Leupold also.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Natchez has a great sale on Weaver scopes and for a bargain on a good scope you'll find a Weaver's Classic V10 2-10x38 hunting scope can be had for cheap. It's on par with a Nikon Buckmaster or a Burris Fullfield II. With a non-sale price of $180-220 I consider them "average Joe" scopes because they're affordable quality that will last a lifetime and are optically plenty good enough for the average daylight shooter. Sale prices start at $150.
A step up to premium optics would bring you up to a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 or even better a Super Slam 2-10x40 or a Bushnell Elite 2.5-10x40 (this model was formerly in the Elite 4200 line), or a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. These are all roughly on par. I'm very picky about optics and I'd be happy with any of these four but would probably go with the Bushnell or the Zeiss for their lighter weight. Prices, including those currently on-sale, run $260-500.
This will give you an idea of where they sit in the scope food chain.Last edited by sholling; 10-08-2012, 6:26 PM."Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--

I put a vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50mm on my 30-06. Was about $260 or so with the bdc reticle... If you can spend more look at the viper series maybe?Comment

I had no idea your scopes were that inexpensive! Nice!https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_...e_p/pa416x.htm
Great glass tracks true and durable.
Hard to beat for the money!

Good scopes. I sold mine and bought a vortex though. Liked the reticle better and the warranty. Newest rifle will be wearing a leupold though... A vx2 is definitely not a bad choice.Comment

Question Maidendeth13----How can you not like the Leupold warr. There is none better. You do not have to have a reciept/be the first or 5th owner and it is no questions asked repair or replacement.
Or did I misundersatnd your post?
OP----The Leupold is an excellent choice as I stated before. I have leupolds on all my serious hunting rifles/pistols(over 20) and some have seen real abuse. They all work perfectly and with good mounts I have never needed to adjust them year to year shooting same handloads.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Vortex's warranty is the same. Never had to use either yet. I knew Leupold's was lifetime, never looked up to see it was also transferable. Hopefully I never have to use it though!Question Maidendeth13----How can you not like the Leupold warr. There is none better. One other thing I forgot about that I didn't like on my VX-2 was the friction adjustments... I like the clicks for some reason.
My newest scope is a Leupold btwComment
