    Advice on Wal Mart Optics

I'm putting together my first AR-15 and I'm looking for a set of REALLY cheap optics to use just for testing.

I bought the 7 dollar Walmart scope but unfortunately I was told at the gun store that it's a weaver mount and I need picitanny.

Here's what I'm looking for; a super cheap optic to use at a 50 foot pistol range.

I do not expect this optic to be, tough, accurate over 100 feet, long lasting, or even that great in general. I just need a cheap scope to use for sighting purposes at an indoor range until I can afford much better sights for my AR rifle!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking for sub 20 dollar pricing

    Thanks in advance!

Most Weaver mounts will work on a Picatinny rail. The only difference is slot size and spacing.

And I agree about iron sights.

What exactly will you be "testing" with a junk scope on there? "for sighting purposes" doesn't make much sense if you will be switching out for a better scope and have to Sight that one in too. Basically you are just itching to get out and shoot your new rifle. I dont blame you, new guns are exciting. Just know that you are spending money on a throw-away scope just to make your gun go bang. If you are ok with that then proceed. But, I would look into Iron sights before a cheap optic.

Don't bother with that scope, take it back if you can. It's listed as a rimfire scope, if your AR is a 22lr no problem, if it's a .223 or 5.56 it will most likely self destruct real quick. Go with irons (polymer) first, then buy a good scope.

Pretty much this, I really want to shoot my gun.

I bought a .22 CMMG upper from Shadow65 that has no sights, just a picitanny rail where the gas block is supposed to be.

I like both those sights but they're still pretty expensive. It sounds like I should just save up though and get good quality stuff. I like guns but the costs just keep adding up!

                    My 2c:

                    (1) Wal-Mart's not that cheap. Look around, you can find a decent scope used for 1/2 the price a junky Wal-scope would cost you.

                    (2) If the $6 scope is the Crosman Targetfinder Superscope, give it to your dog to play with ... Fetch!

I really think you need to re-evaluate your approach to optics and or firearms in general…

It’s an expensive hobby, buying junk makes it even more expensive in the long run. Many people here can attest to that including myself.

First find out what type of optic you really would like to learn/shoot with. Then just get something decent whether its iron rights, scope, or red dot type optic.

You don’t have to spend a fortune, but you don’t have to shop bottom of the scrap pile either.

If you buy a scope for $7, is it worth it to spend double on butler creek caps?

Choose a different hobby or learn to be happy shooting 22lr with iron sights. Quit throwing your money away on junk like $7 scopes.

Everybody has to learn the hard way about buying junk optics, finding out for themselves that it is useless crap, and then starting from scratch again.

Walmart is great for ammo and targets. Not optics.
