    M223 Nikoplex question

    In all my research on this scope (looking at the m223 3-12) I have found that the BDC is only accurate at the max zoom of 12x. What I want to know is if the quick action turret measurements are the same way in the Nikoplex model. I.E. if I have the scope zeroed at 100 then dial in the elevation turrett to 300 for a target at 300 but the zoom only at 4x, will I still be on target?

      Bdc reticle Is just a reference point...use NIKON spot on app on their site...distance changes as you change magnification..


      You can also use the turrets...there are some websites and free apps that tell you how Much to adjust the turrets you a specific distance , wind etc

        It helps to understand the mechanics of a scope and the difference between a 1st focal plane scope and a 2nd focal plane scope. With a 2nd focal plane scope like a Nikon what shifts as you zoom are where the bullet drop compensation marks on the reticle point - not the crosshairs. That's because the BDC reticle remains fixed while the image zooms. On a 1st focal plane scope the reticle zooms with the image keeping the BDC markings accurate at all magnification settings.

        You can and should print out the reference sheet from the Nikon calculator for your chosen round but just keep in mind that the BDC on a 2nd focal plane scope is really just there to help a hunter get rapid minute-of-putting-dinner-on-the-table accuracy and are really only intended (and practical) for use at maximum magnification. The BDC isn't there to help a target shooter.

        The elevation knobs are a different story. They come in 3 flavors: MOA, MIL (metric), or ballistic. MOA (minute of angle) and MIL are absolute and one click will raise and lower the crosshairs some fraction (usually 1/4 or 1/2) of MOA or MIL per click and zoom does not matter. Ballistic turrets are tied to the cartridge and are only accurate with a single bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, and velocity. Ballistic turrets are really nice and very accurate if you are always going to shoot the exact same type of cartridge, for example XM193. If you change ammo types you'll have to have new turrets made based on the ballistics of the new round. How far the scope is zoomed doesn't matter with ballistic turrets either because it's raising and lowering the crosshairs and not referencing BDC points on the reticle.
