How to measure to choose rings?

Getting ready to order my scope and rings but I had a little trouble trying to figure out what height rings to order, I'm pretty sure I'll buy Badger, anybody have any thoughts?

Rem700PSS SA/.308 w/ Badger 20MOA single rail, will be fitting a Leupold Mark4 4x14.5 50mm lrt. (BTW that's a pretty scary warning on Leupolds website about counterfeit scopes.)

I fiddled around with a straight edge and some calipers last night taking measurements, didn't really draw any useful conclusions......

If you are going to mount a 50mm scope you will need the Badger medium high rings.

Take a look at Burris XTR rings. They are a massive well made set of rings for 1/4 the cost of the Badger rings. They are the same size of the Badger max-50 rings. I have them on my Remington 700 police and like them very well.

Yeah thanks for the tip about the Burris XTR's. I'm also wondering about the differences in scope height above the bore that I see in the pictures of peoples' Rem700's. Some scopes look like they are in contact with the barrel and some look over an inch away. My thinking was to get the scope about 5mm off the barrel.

      Later!

There are reasons for both. Too far and you have to add more cheek comb height (tougher without an adjustable comb). Too low and you'll not be able to fit your scope. There are other reasons for higher (see through irons), but you're not wanting that.

Here's how to do it manually. On Badger's sight you can get data about any of their rings and mounts.
For over 30 years, Badger Ordnance has been an innovator in precision mounting systems and military grade weapon enhancements, and we’re just getting started..

Find the diameter of your scope (the full bell diameter) on Leupold's website (2.73"). Now, take that diameter, divide by 2 (1.37"). You will need rings from Badger with at least that much clearance. Now, since you're mounting on the 700 action with a rail, you'll be able to add in the "B" height with the "A" height (you couldn't if you were mounting on, say, a long AR rail).

Getting closer to a reasonable number......

Thanks Plinky that helped, I keep on coming up with a huge 1&1/4" off the mount for the bottom of the scope, must be wrong, seems like the bell objective lands on the barrel near the chamber before the barrel tapers fully, will take another look after dinner tonite.

The widest part of the scope is going to be past the rail and the action. That will give you additional height.

You can also use this as a guide.
