    Yes, an AO and SF do the exact same thing, adjust the parallax. It's a personal preference on which one you like. I prefer the SF because I can keep my eye behind the glass and still adjust easily. If shooting at one distance or not varying distances, a AO can be nice to just set once and forget without it blocking any view.

      SF is better for another reason. Both types of focus use a spring to prevent backlash. In the AO type, the spring is large and located just inside the objective (you can see it if you look inside the objective lens). The AO spring scatters light and reduces contrast. In the SF type, the spring is located near the SF knob and is usually shielded from scattering light.

        Another advantage of the side focus is if you use the Butler Creek scope covers.....you won't be rotating the front cover and possibly have a clearance issue with the barrel if you have it mounted with minimal clearance with the barrel.
