    Help me pick my scope...

Hey folks... well its time to make a rather expensive buy... I am finishing up my 10 22 custom. I have went crazy on it and am not going to stop at the scope.

Here is what its going to be used for:
    1. I will be shooting 75% bench rest/target
    2. I will shoot 60% at 50 but, would like the option to shoot at 100 as well... and in a really rare situation 150-200 (depending on if I am out with a certain group of friends who like this longer range stuff.
    3. I would like to to pink with this at 15-30 from time to time
    4. On very rare occasions, I may take this out to shoot small varmint.. rabbits,etc..(maybe 3% of the time). I NEVER hunt but, I may down the line.
    5. I am almost 100% not going to ever get into a "real" shooting competition... I just shoot with friends so I dont care about specific class rules etc...

Here is what I am think I have narrowed my list to... let me know if you think I should totally avoid any of these or research another:

    **In no particular order

    1. Sightron SIII 8-32 x 56
    2. Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20X Zoom
    3. Leupold VX3 6.5-20x EFR
    4. Leupold Mark 4 ER/T 6.5-20x50mm
    5. Swarovski V5 5x25x52 (4 or Plex)
    6. Swarovski V5 3,5-18x44 (4 or Plex)

If you're going to hunt small game occasionally then go with a low power no higher than 3X - 4X, you'll need the larger field of view on small fast moving animals.

I agree that the magnification is too high on most of these scopes. I think that all of your shooting needs, except the 150-200 yds stuff, could be satisfied with a good 2.5-10X with covered or locking micrometer style turrets.

The Swarovski V5 3,5-18x44 (4 or Plex) is a fine scope for most of your applications.

If you're going to play in the long-range .22LR game you'll probably need a mildot reticle to hold for wind. However, the mildot reticle is a ppor choice for all the other types of shooting.

I suggest you forget about doing all this with one scope. Buy two scopes and a boresight coliimator so that you can swap scopes without loosing zero.

Holy magnification! I don't even use over 16x scopes on my 6.5x47 Lapuas that have much longer reach. I rarely ever use over 12x out to ~700 yards.

I recommend looking at a basic scope like the Redfield Revenge 2-7x for a 22LR semi-auto like the 10/22 -- not inherently uber-accurate rifles -- and save the $$$ in case you get addicted to 22LR and decide you need a 40x, Sako or Anschutz bolt action.

If you want the nicer glass, check out the Zeiss Conquest 3-9.

I was in this mindset about a week ago with the magnification specs... but, its amazing to me how in one group of forum members to the next will say totally different things. I was told 6x24 power is where I need to look if I am going to shoot.

I love it when I think I have something narrowed down and then... Poof, I am back to being confused....lol

Because you're got responses for two different things.

If all you're shooting at is paper, the field of view isn't a big deal. If you plan on hunting, you'll want a usable field of view. Different optics for different tasks.

Then you have to consider magnification vs. quality. The quality isn't an issue with the scopes you've listed, but typically people are looking to compromise one or the other in the $100-$400 range. The difference is obvious when you look at the suggestions in your other thread http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?p=8966062 compared to the models you've listed here. In the other thread you didn't want to spend a grand, here you've listed $1500+ scopes. Which is it?

#1 would be too heavy and look rather silly on a 10/22

Merc, I wasn't talking about that thread you are refering to... I was referring to threads I posted, with the exact same wording, on other websites... I have decided to go in a new directions now... got my scope picked out!

                Thanks for the replies boys!
