One scope for 100-1000yds?

I'm looking at getting a Savage model 12 for precision shooting at various distances.

Can I get one scope that will work for 100-1000yds?

What zoom range should I look for?

What are the most popular makes and models for that kind of scope?

Should I be looking at $1000 scopes for my $1000 rifle?

$1000.00 should definitely get you in the door for optics to go from 100 to 1000 yards. Vortex Viper PST is a good line of scopes to look into. I've seen some of the new Bushnell HDMR scopes with the G2DMR reticle go for as little as $1000 on ebay recently as well. There are cheaper alternatives available, but just be aware that as you get lower in price, the quality becomes spotty and customer service generally gets worse. FWIW, most shooters new to long range typically go overboard on magnification. Less is sometimes better in this case. 10X to 15X should be perfectly fine for getting on target at 1000 yards. Much more than that, and the field of view decreases so that you can no longer keep the target in the scope under recoil. Being able to spot your own rounds downrange is a huge help in adjusting for missed shots.

I say 4-16 minimum, 6-18 or more even better - for the 4 times zoom setups- (4x4=16... so 4-16... make sense? 3-12 zoom is a 4x... 3x4=12...

The 5x zooms would be great 5-25 would be sweet for 100-1k. There tends to be a big increase in cost when you go to a 5x erector though.

More power on the high end, like 20, 25 even better... but you want it to open up wide for the closer stuff.

5-25 is ideal, but others can be satisfactory. I run 4.5-14 from 50-600. I want more power at 600. Old school military will say 10x is enough for 1k, but I disagree. I dont see the point of more than about 25-30 power though- depending on weather conditions the mirage may be so bad you cant use anything above 20 or so.

In the $1k ish price range I'd look at the zeiss lineup. They might have something in a suitable power range in the conquest series - though I dont know for sure. They're glass is excellent.

Or I'd start looking at nightforce in the $1,400-1500 nxs second focal plane series.

Or checkout snipershide, caprc, snipercentral and see what glass people are talking about in your budget- though a lot of those guys are running the 2.5k+ glass.

Bushnell is actually getting good reviews on their tactical elites. My brother ordered one recently for his precision rifle.

I checked SWFA "sample list" and they had 2 different ones at less than 1k last night. They werent the premium new model tacticals, but what I gathered at a glance, they're pretty nice and would work very well under your budget.

I've bought a scope from their sample list before, and was very pleased.

A Nightforce NXS5.5X22 scope or Leupold MK4 will do you well. The difference between the cheaper ones and costly one is the quality of the glass and assembly which means you will be able to see better at range. The defination of the lines, bullet holes etc
