Thoughts on Scope versus Sight

This is in response to Joel1316 who asked - on April 30, 2008 -
(I'm looking at a Nikon 1x scope (no magnification).
The rifle will mainly be used for hunting/range work out to about a 100 yards. Does anyone have any personal experience regarding 1x scopes, especially the one from Nikon? Would a red dot be better? I don't want a red dot simply for the reason that it looks odd on a hunting rifle, LOL...) -

I hope you found the scope you wanted. What did you end up with?

I recently bought my first AR 15 style...S&W M&P 15 Optics Ready.
I am in a similar quandary as you were. Although not a hunter I would most
likely use mine for range and would want to be skilled at close quarter use.
I was thinking a 1x with some magnification would be appropriate also.
In fact I really don't see myself needing much more out to 50 yards max, to
develop accuracy skill.
I don't want to buy some super powered scope for lots of money that I don't need.
I figure a scope would be useful as my eyesight isn't the greatest and using a scope
over iron sights would help me see better what I am aiming at.
Would a optic sight be better for things 50 yards or less?
I thought the 1x with some zoom would be better. The 1x for close quarter and the
zoom function to aid in 25 to 50 yard range or greater.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

With peep sights and bifocals I can hit a 24" plough disc at 200 yards from a standing position. Up until I was shown that by an instructor, I always thought I needed optics as I got older.

What was that story on NRA Guns 'n Gold? Teddy Roosevelt took Winchester Lever Action .30-06's to Africa and was blind in one eye. He shot several animals each day while on safari for a year using open iron sights. But then, Teddy was a tough SOB.

I like optics, too.....but they have to be aligned, adjusted, and taken care of.

p7m8jg - I 100% agree - better to be able to function with iron sights first then step up to the fancy optics as needed/wanted.
Funny how it is so easy to be enticed by all the latest and greatest tech when basic things will do the job too.

This a great red dot sight,it will allow you to cowitness with your irons. you will be able to see the irons through the scope window. Also works great under low light and does not glare(green setting).PM if you have any question.
