Ok, so per Loosewreck's request, here's my writeup of my Vortex customer service experience.
I've got a Viper PST 4-16 FFP MRAD in a BOBRO Precision Optic Mount on an AR308. I'd put about 150 rounds it with no problems, except I noticed the parallax adjustment knob seemed odd. It was REALLY easy to turn one way, and REALLY stiff the other way. Anyways, later, I went to a CA PRC marksmanship clinic, and about halfway through the class I started having problems.
Basically, what looked like drops of water with some sort of oily black substance suspended inside started appearing in my reticle. They seemed to be in the first focal plane, as they stayed the same size relative to the reticle through my magnification range. (i.e. zoom in, they get bigger, zoom out, they get smaller)
I called Vortex the next day. The nice one is you don't even need to call; with their warranty, you literally just print out the return form (http://www.vortexoptics.com/uploads/repair_form.pdf), package it up, and send it in. They actually called me once they received it (I don't know how, but all my notes on the issue disappeared once I printed the danged form, so they wanted to know what was wrong with it :P), and IIRC shipped it back the next day. So shipped it to them 5/21, had a tracking number for the return by 5/24.
Unfortunately, they ship FedEx Ground.....so while it only took 2 days to get from CA > WI, and 1 day to repair, it took 7 days to get from WI back to CA.
Oh well, can't really complain.
Anyways, the packing slip says:
"PST 4-16 FFP Mrad: (reticle debris/PA issue) Cleaned reticle, reset parallax at 100 yards. Checked tested and purged scope. PA issue was due to mount ring over tightening. Recommended tension is 12-15 inch lbs. Over tightening will cause scope malfunction and or failure"
So unless I'm misreading, I overtightened the scope mount which screwed up the parallax knob, and there was some unspecified debris on the reticle? Anyways, I'm hoping to take it back out within the next two weeks and see how it goes.
All in all, good experience. Now, to try and find someone in SoCal with a scope torque wrench and level who's willing to help a poor new father remount it right in exchange for monsters/beer/pizza/donuts/whatever....
