Looking for recommendations for an under $500 spotting scope for paper punching

    Hi all:

I am a photographer and cinematographer so I already know you get what you pay for, I know optics and that I should be spending $2,000+
to get something really good. But I just bought a bunch of new guns, ammo, accessories and I am pretty tapped out on gun budget. So what is your vote for
the best spotting scope for under $500? Use is spotting groups on paper target shooting and for sighting in new rifles at 100-300 yards.

I have a Konus from years ago but its so old that the rubber casing started disintegrating, it's all sticky and gross and I was never thrilled with it anyway,
it was mediocre. If spotting scopes have followed other optical trends the past few years, there should be some pretty nice optics out there now, even
for $400-$500? Low light isn't much of a factor, clarity and being able to see 5.56 holes in paper at average (100-200 yard) ranges is.

I have tripods, I don't care if it comes with a case as I have a lot of hard cases for it. Vortex? Leupold? I found the Nikon Prostaff 5 20-60x82 for under $600, it may be on closeout.
I have a 223 series Nikon scope on one of my ARs and its excellent so perhaps their spotting scope at this range is a notch above? Nikon knows how to make good glass, thats for sure.

    What say you?

I just got a Leupold from sportsmans warehouse. 20-60x. So far it’s really clear and I like it. It’s on sale for like $250 give or take.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Have you tried it past 100 yards? Can you still see hits out at 200 clearly? Those damn little holes in the paper are really small and my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

I have yet to take it to the range, but I’ve been clowning around the neighborhood with it and am feeling pretty confident about it.

Pentax makes really excellent optics. I have one of their 20x60’s. Dont temember the cost but many reviews say it’s the equal to Zeiss and Swarovski.

MidwayUSA has the Athlon Talos spotting scope on sale right now for $120 (normally $214).

It performs far above it's price.

As a follow up, after literally months of research, reading reviews online, watching YouTube reviews, asking different shooters I know, I ended up buy a closeout Vortex Viper HD (VPR-80A-HD) from a Sporting goods store online.
The newer Vortex HD (V2) replaced mine (V1) but in looking at the feature comparisons, other than the 85mm objective lens diameter on the new one versus the 80mm on the V1, I actually like the feature set better on the older scope.
I read a lot of very technical reviews and I am convinced that the Vortex spotting scopes offer a good value. All spotting scopes, other than a few high end ones seem to be made in China so it really came down to warranty as well as
reviews and features. It's definitely not a Swarovski or high end Leupold but for my goal of under $500, seemed like a deal.

The scope originally had an MSRP of $1,099 and the price sticker than the sporting good store had on the box normally was $899. It was on closeout for $449 versus $899 for the newer Viper HD variant but I found one on a flash sale and got it for $390 with free delivery.
I have not had it out to the range yet but just did some glassing around my neighborhood and I'm pretty happy with the image. It came with a nice neoprene scope cover with detachable neoprene lens caps for both sides to go over the rubber lens caps.

If you can find one on closeout, this seemed to be a case of where the successor improved in one area (5mm larger objective lens), but took away features people liked (dual focus wheels, one coarse and one fine, the knobs are stacked and I find this helpful), and a small pic rail if I want to mount a laser, sight, etc.
So I figured at much less than half the price of the new one, I bought a scope that has better features and in shootout videos, very small differences in actual images between the V1 and V2.

Wow, killer deal if it's even halfway good.
