Best Dot for Astigmatism? Green, Red? My Experience

After a few years of pistol red dot optic use I thought I was simply stuck with seeing a splotch instead of a dot. I have astigmatism in both eyes.

Most folks seem to think that simply getting a green dot is the answer.

I share my experience with this and some advice based on my own findings here:

    Nicely done.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Much appreciated, you'd be surprised how much hate it's getting over on the Glock forums lol

        Weird.

Except that you choose to show optics mounted on Glocks, nothing to do with the weapons.

I have and RMR (red) on my EDC, a green Holosun 510 on a shotgun, and two red Holosuns on lever rifles. Happens I like the ring-and-dot; my astigmatism is mostly corrected by my glasses.

I went to the eye doc earlier this year and it seemed all they wanted to do was sell me some glasses. I kept bringing up my astigmatism and they never really addressed it. This was my main reason for going lol. I may go visit a separate eye doc and let them know ahead of time this is my main concern. I still see great, better than most and still read the 20/20 lines at the eye doc. The astigmatism at night, while driving can be tough though for sure!

I think my next optic will be a Holosun 507 Comp. Was going to go with a Trijicon SRO, but they seem more on the fragile side. I've heard they have great warranty etc, but would rather not have to go down that path.

The best red dot for astigmatism is actually the max illumination on a 1x prism.

I don’t believe they have shrunk them down that small yet.

Another issue with prism optics on pistols is eye relief. The new ones (like the Chinese PA 1x) have excellent eye relief for long guns but not enough for handguns.

Yeah, that could be an issue lol. I also notice at least for me, both red and green dots clear up a little bit when doing some outdoors shooting vs indoors shooting.

The best thing to do is to take your optic off your gun and bring it with you to the optometrist. No one will feel threatened or uneasy with a dismounted "Red Dot" sight. Figure out how far the optic typically sits from your eye when you shoot and test out the sight while looking through the "one or two, two or three" instrument. Do it in a well lit room.
