My favorite do-it-all optic is my 1-4 swfa ss. However my favorite for carbine courses (especially a vehicle or any course with unconventional shooting positions) is a red dot, aimpoint is my preference.
The "best" handgun caliber debate rages on, meanwhile I just keep buying low recoil 00 buck.

Do you always shoot with both eyes open? If so, then it depends on the maximum engagement distance.

Up to 200 yards - any Aimpoint
Up to 450 yards - Trijicon Accupoint TR 24
Lots of 300 yards+ shooting - ACOG with long eye relief

Any optic heavier than the three listed above are best reserved for dedicated DMRs.
