Nikon 3x9x40 BDC Problems

I took my Savage Model 14 out to Angeles today to sight her in, and trouble struck. The rifle is in .308, and is equipped with Weaver rings and bases. But as I tried to sight it in, the shots were WAY under.
I had turned the elevation knob as far as I could in the UP direction, but the bullet was striking 5 feet below point of aim. So I packaged up the scope and sent it back to Nikon. The scope is a brand new 3x9x40 ProStaff with the BDC recticle. I have one on my Model 200 Stevens that works great. Can anyone relate to this ?. Thanks, USMCM16A2

May not be the scope thats the problem. What kind of rings and bases did you use?

Most likely is NOT the scope (esp a Nikon, Burris, Leupy, IOR, etc.) but an accretion of errors stacking in the wrong direction. Barrel may be slightly angled in relation to receiver in your rifle, rings/mounts could be off, etc.

You could try swapping the rings + reversing their direction, for example.

This is really the kinda stuff shims are for.

Can you swap the scope from your other rifle onto this one and see if it shoots OK with it?

It's either the rifle, the rings, or the scope, and since you have another of everything, you can test them. Best to only change one thing at time when troubleshooting!

If you are using 2 piece bases do you have the correct one in the front/back?

I had a Nikon do this in when a set of Leupold rings were way out of alignment. The scope bound up so bad the side focus wouldn't turn. I would bet you need to lap the rings.

You don't need to lap the rings when the bases are out of alignment. You need to fix the source of the problem, not the symptoms. Get the bases in order then see if the rings need lapping. Even some of the beefy one piece bases can suffer from this. If the receiver bridge is out of whack, and you tighten down a perfectly true badger base, the base will be pulled and tweaked to the point its no longer square. The base would need to be bedded then ring alignment checked.

Nikon Scope Problem

I have found the source of the scopes problem, ITS OWNER !!!!!!!!. I (with BWeise, and others help) I took a closer look at the situation, and I received what I thought were the correct bases, WRONG. The receiver is FLAT in the rear, and round in the front.
The rifle is a NEW SAVAGE model 14, new with a twist, the dealer had it in a box for 4 years in his gun store. The rifle is a walnut stocked Model 14 in .308 Winchester pre-accutrigger, I paid $300 for it. I called Savage and they said it was produced 10/2003. Joe brought it into his store in 3/04.
Anyhow, I now have to look for a set of bases for it, made for the Model 14 a receiver that is flat in the rear and round in the front. AND call Nikon, wipe the mud off my face, and have them send me the scope back. Too bad there is not an emoticon with a dunce cap!!!!!!. Thanks, to all, USMCM16A2

I just took a look at Midway and only saw bases for the round rear
