Ok so im pretty new to this. I just purchased my first AR, a S&W M&P15 and want to put a close range "tatical" scope on it. Im probably never going to be shootign out of 200 yards but i do like a little bit of magnification on my scope if possible. Any ideas? Oh and im trying to keep in on a budget of less than say $200

for $200 you are going to be hard pressed to find an optic worth having without magnification. stick with iron sites and spend the $200 on ammo. practice is more better than a cheep optic -
The more you spend on a scope the better they are. In the price range you are looking at mostly they will be made in China. Look on midways web site.California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.Comment

For $200, I cant really recommend anything I would use myself in terms of scopes. You can get yourself into a PA RDS or something else, but that price range, you will mostly be looking at cheaper Chinese optics or hunting scopes like a 3-9x40
Personally I think the 1-4x scopes are the bees knees as one of the most versatile optic that you can use on an AR-15... 1x for close in CQB work and 4x to reach out.
You can start with a Burris MTAC for around $300. But my favorite 1-4x right now is the Vortex Viper PST which is around $500. There are other options out there, you just have to find them. You will see a lot of 1-4x scopes, but the cheaper ones, are usually not TRUE 1x scopes, and the optics are not as nice. Vortex has tactical turrets, and I prefer to dial in correction instead of hold over, so that's my reason for picking that optic.
I suggest you do some more research, and save some more money. If you want optics, do it right, otherwise you will find yourself doing it again.ExtremeXComment

Right on the money - your best choice here Vortex Viper 2-7x32, get the BDC reticule
Or the Redfield Revolution scope series 2-7x or 3-9x models, made in USA, the Revenge series are Philippine made which is also good.Comment

That Vortex Viper 2-7x32 is a discontinued model, but that is a really good price for that scope, the only downside is the smaller objective.
OP I would jump on that if its something you like, its way better than the Redfield Rev scopes. The Redfield is closer to the Diamondback series, and I still like the Diamondback more.
OP did say close range tactical, and the Viper line is more of a hunting scope. The BDC reticle on their scopes are pretty good if you prefer to hold over.
I still think a solid 1-4x scope is the way to go.
OP might want to give this a read.

I forgot I have this scope. Like ExtremeX says if you want something good and CQB type maybe this will work. Weaver Classic 1-3x20, made in Japan for around $160
If you are interested, PM me to get a coupon for Opticsplanet
On my rimfire AR.

I haven't used this model before, but the Burris version of this optic is pretty popular so its worth a look.
It's a fixed 3x optic
Quality rifle scopes including LPVO 1-6x, 1-8x variable power, and long-range optics. Primary Arms ACSS reticles, Vortex, Leupold, and more brands.
Thats only if you really need the magnification, if not, I'd just get a Micro red dot from Primary Arms.
That being said, I am a big fan of 1-4x optics too. I actually just replaced my MTAC with a Viper PST as my shooting style favors the precision reticle of the PST.Comment
