    ACOG or Holographic

Hey so it is about time for me to upgrade optics on my AR and I am not sure which way I want to go. Part of me wants to go Acog, but the other part of me wants to go with a holographic site with the magnifier. Any suggestions or past experiences that can help steer me in the right direction?
    Thanks!

This is easy. If most of your shooting is 0-200yds, get the EOTech. If it's 100Y>, get the ACOG.

If I had the money I would go with the ACOG. They are deadly accurate and really help to reach out and touch someone. I have an Eotech 512 that serves me just fine. Yes, you could always get a magnifier behind it. The eotech makes target acquisition a snap.

They are two totally different optics for two different applications.

It all depends on the type of shooting you intent on doing...

Most casual shooters would probably benefit more from a quality 1-4x scope. Its very easy to use a true 1x scope like an Eotech for CQB and have magnification for shots farther out. With tactical turrets you can also dial in correction.

Part of this is also personal preference. I like Eotechs, but I also have an ACOG. ACOG is pretty awesome, but it wont replace an Eotech for CQB work.

ACOG has its own set of "problems" depending on the model you pick, the BDC is set of a specific type of ammo and barrel length on the rifle, if you feed it ammo that's greatly varies from what it was designed for, you loose accurate ranging and drop from its set calibrations.

Eotech is harder to shoot at a distance than a optic like a scope or ACOG. I dont really care for the magnifier, I rather use an ACOG or a Scope.

You should try them all in a store, and make a decision based on your needs and shooting style.

What's the reasoning, exactly? I've never owned or used reddots beyond the occasional borrowed rifle, but the ACOG chevrons and horseshoes seem like they'd function just fine like a reddot as close as five yards, let alone 25-50-100.

(personal bias: have a 3x30 acog)

Thanks for the suggestion!! So would you still recommend getting the EOTech magnifier if you are shooting 200 yds and in?

Thank you for the insight. I am leaning more towards the ACOG because of the distances I will be shooting at.

Magnification will slow you down at close range, even if it's just 3-4X. You could shoot it BAC-style (i.e. occluded) but you'll have bad POI/POA differences 15Y and out.

No, I wouldn't even though I run a magnifier behind my EOTech. A magnifier really helps if you're shooting 75% 0-100yds and 25% (100yds and out) and if you're going be shooting 10" COM-type targets. You can hit man-sized targets with the EOTech out to 400yds, depending on your vision.

If you can afford an ACOG, I say get it. One one of the coolest optics you can put on an AR.

Part of the appeal to me was its always on, always ready, zero maintenance design... Its extremely durable and optics are crystal clear. Its really a pleasure to shoot with.

With that said, it takes some practice to use it effectively as a CQB optic. Any magnification in close range is going to slow you down, which is why an Eotech or Aimpoint is tops for close range work.

If you enjoy shooting from a bench or if you are more of a "precession" type of shooter, you would be hard pressed to get anything other than a good scope.

While I love the ACOG, it is harder to be as precice with it as you would be with a scope. Just by design, its purpose is to increase hit potential on man sized targets and fast/accurate ranging of your targets using the reticle. Might not be the best optic for trying to coke cans from a bench, but its fun to try.

I had both. Still have acog. Binden aiming concept is easy to learn and works pretty well.

I always shoot my ACOG BAC-style, but I've read that a small portion (<5%?) of population is unable to use BAC style aiming.

As far as POI/POA, I'm not sure what you're referencing. The chevron has a point that's used for 300y (or is it meter? never remember...) and for 25y. At 50y the POI/POA is roughly between the 200y (bottom of top tip of chevron) and 25/300y vertical line tip... but if you're in a hurry, just centering the colored portion of the recticle on center mass seems to work like a pseudo-reddot.

I concour sir... Not to mention you realize an Eotech with a magnafiers like $1,000 right lol? I say Eotech no magnafier for close and a scope for anything else but that's just my opinion as an XPS2-0 owner.

I was making a reference to ACOG Phoria and resultant Occluded Sight Shooting, due to the distance between your eyes. If you are superimposing a reticle on a target, its POI is going to be different than if you are looking directly through the optic.

That is why I am in this dilemma, I might be shooting something that is as close as 2 yds up to 200+ yds. The glory of killing hogs!

OP, if you really look at your application, a solid 1-4x scope is your best choice.

I 2nd the no magnafier option if you go Eotech. You could use that money to get a second optic on QD mounts and swap depending on what you will be doing.

I have a RDS, ACOG, and Scope... I love all of them for different reasons.
