    Which Stevens 200 Rings

I bought a Stevens 200 in 7mm Mag. I bought the right mounts for it, but can;t find which height rings to use. I am trying to save a trip to the store and avoid trial and error. Should I buy low, std or high rings?

I'm in the same boat-- wife just bought one for me in 300 Win Mag.

Guy told me medium rings for *most* scopes with a end at 40mm or smaller; bigger end and you'll want the tall rings.....

we'll see: I've got 5 days left to wait..........
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

Different manufacturers have different measurements for low, medium and high. You need to look at that, as well as the height of the base and size of the scope.

true. And sorry for that-- I have standard weaver's for the base (two piece) and medium rings awaiting either leupold (VX1 3-9) or a Nikon Pro staff 3-9....... so we'll see.

Wow we think alike. I also have both the VX-1 and Prostaff and am deciding which one to use for the Stevens 200. I am leaning towards the Prostaff. Really good cheap hunting rifle

yeah: I'm not much into buying glass: its funny...I have absolutely NO problem dropping 1K on a rifle but get squimish when it comes to glass over ~~$200. I mean I like clear & dont like crap; but Zeiss and swarski scopes would be nice---- I can *make do* with even a bushnell. I'm sure my tune would change if shooting 1000 regularly...but until then both those I mentioned (nikon and leopold) have been good to me over the years so I aint gonna try somthin' new over something tried and true.

I used to be that way. But its easier to make a decent gun shoot well with great glass than to make a great gun shoot well with so-so glass. I never understood before how someone would recommend spending the same on a scope as what was spent on the rifle. For the type of shooting I do now, I understand completely. For normal hunting, the tried and true nikons and bushnells should work fine, though.

Some rings are speced for the height from rail to the bottom of the ring, while others are speced from the rail to the centerline, so you have to check before ordering. Also, as rksimple said, heights are different between different brands and models - Burris' medium is different from Leupold's medium, and Leupolds QRW medium is different from their Mk4 medium.

Assuming the clearance at the objective bell is the same as at the mount point, here's how you figure the ring size:

                      - Measure the objective bell (or eyepiece, whichever is bigger).

                      - Divide this by 2. This is the minimum height the centerline of the rings need to be for the scope to clear the gun. If there's a mount plus rings, it's the height of both together.

                      - For rings spec'd to the base of the ring instead of the centerline, subtract half of the tube size (0.5", or 0.59" for 30mm) to get the ring height.

Metal head. Have you tried different rings for your Savage 200? I am curious which has a good cheek weld.
