Aimpoint comp m4 or Eotech? Would one be better than the other?

1st things 1st. I'm not asking opinions of one type and how you like it. I'd like an educated answer from people who are experienced with both types, or can tell me what facts made you purchase one over the other.

I'm in the market for a nice optic that I can slap a 3X magnifier on. Both the eotechs and aimpoints have this option and are the top 2 sought after brands if trijicons are out of reach. I'd love me a trijicon but I can't afford $1000. I am planning to buy the aimpoint or eotech and then buy the magnifier next year or maybe 6 months down the line. Maybe trade for a trijicon later.

So my question is simple, which one would be better and why? They both seem pretty durable, extremely reliable and look great. I know the reticle patterns are different and one is a holographic and the other is a red dot but that's not a concern to me unless one has some sort flaws in design. Would one be better than the other at distance shooting with the magnifier?

Anyways, any thing you can let me know would be great.

    Thank you!

Do a search, been discussed to death. And for the price of a comp m4 and 3x mag you could easily get a acog

      What MrPlink said.

If the ACOG is what you want, just save until you get it.

For me, magnified (3x) eotech laser generated holograph reticle looks way better than magnified led generated aimpoint dot due to my astigmatism. The aimpoint looks like a blob, smear or multi dot when magnified depending on how my eye is behaving.

That said, I prefer the aimpoint m4s as a plain non magnified red dot over the eotech because of the sight picture with cowitnesswd irons.
I have both but that's my preference. The aimpoint m4s also gives me the impression of having a more rugged build. Not that I'm likely to ever damage either in their typical enthusiest optic role. I'd be willing to bet you could drive a nail with the aimpoint and it wouldn't hurt it. Fortunately, I own a hammer and the most abuse mine will see is a clutz drop.

Out of the 2 options I prefer the Eotech only because I like the reticle better, for me its simple as that...

Aimpoints also have their strong points too... battery life seems to be the biggest one. Some say they are also more durable.

Both are great optics, but if you really want an ACOG, save up and get one, its pretty amazing.

End of the day, it comes down to application and the type of shooting you plan on doing. Pretty hard to beat a non-magnified optic for CQB type work.

For longer shots some magnification helps me a lot, but often times the dot size is too big for precision shooting. Aimpoint for example with a 2 MOA dot at 300 yards is 6" in diameter covering that much of the target. If I'm target shooting, its a bit harder to get tighter groups. On a man sized target, not a big deal.

Have you consider a 1-4x scope, its a very versatile option.

I agree with nitroxdiver. The magnified EOTech reticle is better for my eyes than the Aimpoint. The Aimpoint sights have phenomenal battery life, and the ability to just leave the sight on seems to be attractive to many people.

The EOTech uses a laser to illuminate a hologram, and lasers use more juice than LEDs do. While I can certainly see the benefit to an "always-on" optic, hitting the button on my EOTech is now as second nature as manipulating the safety.

I find that the EOTech's standard A65 reticle gives me options that the Aimpoint does not. For example, the A65 reticle can be used as a rangefinder of sorts.

EOTech claims the average US adult male stands 5' 8". At 100 yards, that man fills the 65MOA circle top to bottom. At 200 yards, half the circle, 300 yards, 1/3 of the circle, and 1/4 of the circle at 400 yards.

As well, with the girth of a whitetail at 16-18", at 25 yards, the distance from belly to spine fills the 65MOA circle. at 50 yards, half the circle, and at 100 yards, 1/4 of the circle.

on an AR, with the center dot zeroed at 50/200 yards with a 62 grain FMJ, the bottom of the circle is 7 yards.

Not badmouthing the Aimpoint in any manner, just for my own uses, the EOTech provides some extras that a single dot does not. Passionate fans exist for both optics, much like Ford/Chevy, Marlin/Winchester and 9mm/40. Try them both, if you can, and pick the one that works for YOU.
