    Magnification

I am considering a few options, one of them being the Primary Arms 3x Compact scope. However, while I do have a scope of another rifle, I am in no way an expert when it comes to optics/scopes. I am not sure if a 3x would work for me.......

Anyway, I was hoping that some calguners could post some pics of magnifications of 1x, 3x, and 5x at particular distances, like 50, 100, 150, 200 yards. I would like to be able to see just how much a 3x magnifies an object.

I would appreciate anything you could post to help. Thanks

No pics, but think of it like this. A 3x would make an image at 50 yards as large as if it were 17 yards away without magnification. 100 yards it would be as if it were 33 yards away without magnification, and so on. So you would need to say what you are trying to see (targets? Ground squirrels? Humans? Elk?) at these ranges to answer the question.

What size targets and what range do you plan on shooting?

What type of rifle? What Caliber? What are you planning on using it for? What do you expect optics to do for you?

Well, I don't want this to turn into a similar thread that was up awhile ago, but I would like to shoot 50-150, maybe 200 yards with my 16" 5.56/.223 AR. I know I won't be shooting tight groups at the larger distances, but I don't want a full sized scope. I know that 150 would be like shooting 50 yards, but still, I am a visual person and was hoping to see some examples to give me something to think about.

A 1-4x scope is pretty hard to beat on an AR if you are shooting anything out to 400yds.

Well, I am not going to spend $500 or anything like that, so I would say up to $300, but even then, I would prefer to keep it around $200. A few reasons I am interested in the Primary Arms 3x Compact Scope.....1) It's compact.....2) Price is $179......3) Good reputation......4) I can add a small optic on the scope rail

For the love of God, please don't do that...

You'd be better off with this: http://swfa.com/Weaver-1-3x20-Classi...ope-P2864.aspx

It's 1x-3x so you don't need to buy another 1x optic, it's got excellent glass, and it's made in Japan.

                  This!

Optics are not the place to cheap out. Cheap (not always inexpensive though) optics will be more of a hinderance than a help. For shooting out to 400, why not just use irons? IF you can already shoot well with irons and just want to try optics, that's a great reason. Just, do not buy cheap optics or mounts.

If I wanted a full size scope I would buy that $300 Nikon that is made for .223/5.56. I think that is a great scope. But I really want to avoid a full size scope.
