    Optic/Scope Advice

Okay, so I decided to post this in this forum since I don't seem to be finding the help I need in the Centerfire Rifle forum.

This will be the first optic/scope I buy, I have read up on scopes, etc., but I am still uncomfortable choosing one for my needs. I am not sure how large a magnifier I would need for the distance I want to shoot.

I want something versatile, mainly for range shooting/zombies. I to shoot between 50-150 yards accurately, further would be a plus. I am shooting a BCM mid-length 16" flattop upper.

I can't buy one of the high priced optics, nor would I want to for my uses. I really want to spend around $200, maybe $300. I guess what it comes down to is that I just don't which direction I would be better off with.

Here are some options that I am currently looking at.......any opinions on these? The Primary Arms Compact Scope intrigues me (but not sure if the 3x will be enough for my needs) along with the lucid, but I don't know if those are my best options. I also like that I can throw a cheaper optic on the compact scope rails if I wanted to. I think the Nikkon would be good, but I really don't want to spend that much, as there are other things I want to purchase.

    Lucid HD7

    Nikkon M-223 2-8x32

A good 3x scope would be plenty out to 50-150 and be accurate. People really tend to over-value magnification.

Now if you're trying to keep the crosshair centered on a 1/16th inch speck on a piece of paper at 100 yards, yeah you'll want to go higher. I'd get the 2-8 so you at least have the option of more magnification if you want it.

Yea, I think a 2-8x is more what I would want, problem is, I really don't want a full sized scope.

Does anyone know of another, quality, compact scope that is around $200 that has more than 3x? I know its a long shot.....

The Sightmark Triple Duty might fit the bill:

Also the new P-223 line by Nikon:

I believe these will be available in the March-May time frame.

+1 on the Primary Arms 3x but if I were you I would wait a second rumor has it they are making a 5x that will be a game changer.

Yeah, I heard that, but I also don't want to wait 6-8 months or more. I will see if I can find some info on it. Thanks to everyone.

How much magnification you need depends on how large a target you want to hit.

The .mil uses 1x power per 100 yards to hit a human sized target. (i.e 4x ACOG for a rifle in 5.56mm that can shoot up to a range of ~400 yards and still be useful, and a 10x fixed scope for a DMR rifle in 7.62mm up to around 1000 yards.)

A benchrest shooter can easily use a 32x scope at 100 yards to hit a target the size of a bean.

Which are you trying to do?

50-150, but it would be nice to shoot farther. However, I prefer a compact type scope over a full sized one.

Hell what you need for that range is a Primary Arms Micro dot they are cheap and work great! I have one on every AK I own
