    What optics to get

Hey guys I recently purchased a new Springfield M1A standard rifle and am taking it hunting soon. Any advice on what rails and optics to use for it? I am new to hunting and am going for deer and boar on my first hunt.

    Thanks

What is wrong with the sights?Anyway,if you put a scope on a standard, you lose any kind of cheekweld to the stock.I have a factory Springfield mount on one of mine, with a 3-15x50 scope.I would buy a Smith Enterprise mount next time. The gun has a fiberglass stock that I mounted a adjustable cheek rest on.I am talking close to a 1 1/2" rise to use the scope. If you go to a forward rail mount you are pretty much going to have to use a pistol scope or red dot.I have tried both on a Socom.Since I love shooting that,I pulled off that stuff and stick with the sights. The Socom has bigger sights for CQB,but I can hit a 12" plate regular with the sights. The standard has finer sights and I have killed antelope with the sights at over 450 yds.Remember that thing is kind of heavy already and if you add stuff, more weight.Have you shot it with the sights?I am not knocking anybody for wanting a scope.I am a little older and want a scope on most rifles. There are guys that shoot at my gun range, shooting Garands that I would not want to be against in a gun fight inside of 800-1000yds.If you learn the sights on it,you can open a can of whoopXXX on anything.Click on my name and PM me if you need help.I love my M1As

I am in the same boat as KShack, I just got my M1A standard last wednesday and have already put 100 rounds through it

I have my other toys like a 16" AR that has a red dot, 20" AR with a 3x9 scope on it and my AK which I REFUSE to put anything on.

As this is my first .308 I really wanted to take advantage of that longer round and was hoping to get something in the x15 power range. But I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't do that until I put at least 500 rounds through her before I made any purchases.

Good thing for me is that the rifle came with a Springfield mount, in a box not on the rifle. Question for you Coyote, what didn't you like about it? The mount that is.

Thanks and sorry didn't mean to steal your thread KShack!
