    Fixed or variable power scope?

I just bought a remmy 700 in .223 I'm going to me using it for Target only. I'd like to shoot 300-500 yards. I have been looking at the Bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10x40 or elite 4200 6-24x44. Any input will be great!

I don't long range shoot but here's my take. If you hunt you need variable since animals don't stand still all day while you find them in the reticule. For targets they don't run off and away so you can do fixed.

I guess that doesn't really help you but maybe somebody who wants to use his rifle to hunt will hopefully use this.

If you are only going to shoot targets, get the higher powered variable. The 24x will let you see bullet holes further out.

I have four Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24's for use on varmint rifles. They made shots out to 330 yards on sage rats - about as far as I can see them. They are about the best value on the market. The Elite 4200 has an additional lens and better optical quality than the 3200. Although discontinued in favor of the new Elite brand there are some 4200's still available. Jump on one if you can. Avoid the 8-32 Elite 4200, I exchanged mine. The new Elite 6-24x40 is a good buy.

Otherwise any of the variables by major brand manufacturers will do, depending on your price range. The Burris Black Diamond is a good choice.

Otherwise a good alternative fixed power is the Weaver T-Series in 24x or 32x.

The best of both worlds would be a variable FFP... front focal plane focusing scope.
