Leupold scope question

I was told that a gold ring around a Leupold rifle scope means it's a higher end unit. Any truth to it?

No. All Leupold scopes with the exception of the rifleman one have the gold ring. The rifleman one may now have the ring also. The ring is their trademark.

Models in the "Tactical" category do not have a gold ring, regardless of their price.

An example would be the VX-R Patrol(tactical) vs. the VX-R Hog.

Leupold had their Gold ring series which used to refer to more products. They had their Gold Ring binoculars and scopes and have Green Ring binoculars and spotting scopes. Gold Ring is their high end series made in the US.. and Green ring was their "offshore" made series. Leupold has recently disco. the Gold Ring binoculars but their "Hunting" scopes are still Gold ring. Gold Ring also refered to the warranty you would receive. Gold Ring is a lifetime warranty. Their Tactical line (mark AR's and mark 4's) does not have the gold ring around the objective but still keeps the same lifetime warranty.

The bolder the ring the higher the quality, bigger is better. Thin gold ring, med gold ring, thick gold ring, so vx-1, vx11, vx111. I'm sure all tacticals have gold ring they are just blacked out.

So which scopes are made over seas?

Vari-x 3 tactical has the black ring. 10x mark 4 (m3a) has no rings at all.

The VXI, VXII, (VX1 and VX2 now)and VX 3 are all made here in the US. The VXR is definitely assembled here, but some of the elctronics might come from overseas and added to the process here.

I was just curious, LL post over at the hide states that over 80% of the parts are made in house, and thats why Leupold does not put made in USA on the scopes.
