    Mildot question

    If you have a variable magnification scope and change the power./ magnification. How does that effect the mildot distance or range finding ability?
    So if im at 4x and the third mildot down is sighted at 300 yards, what would happen if I change to 9x... Is the third mildot down still 300 yards?
    How does the increase in magnification effect the range finding ability?

    Are all "mildots" the same distance... Is there a standardization between manufactures (Nikon, Bushnell, Leupold....)

    For SFP, no

      The distance is the same from dot to dot, one mil. There are differences in the shape and sizes of the dots and thus the distance between the dots, edge to edge. Its not a manufacture difference, its just what ever style mildot. The "army" mildots are round dots. The other common shape are "football" shaped oval dots. Some reticles dont use dots at all, just hash marks.

If that is the case how do you know on a variable power scope what power gives the accurate mildot value (one mildot = 3.6 inches at 100 yards)?

          Depends on the scope manufacturer. On my Nikon Bushmaster, one of the power settings is colored differently. At that power Mil is correct. Most likely you would have to research your particular scope.

            On a second focal plane scope, the correct magnification for your reticle to subtend correctly is usually the highest magnification. There are instances when this isn't the case (such as a Nightforce 8-32x SFP subtends correctly at 22x), but it should say in your owners manual.

            It is a good idea to double check however, use your laser range finder to range 100 yards, then use these targets in MIL measured in yards at the link below:



            If you shoot at Angeles, it's always a good idea as they don't set their stands at exactly 100 yards.

            When you set up your target, adjust your magnification until your reticle reads 1 mil correctly to the target.

              I was looking at a Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed a 10 x 40 or the Nikon Prostaff Mildot which is 4-12 x 40.

              I currently have the Springfield Armory 4-14 x 56, 1st gen which has a FFP.

                  On a fixed power scope, the mil dots are always accurate. On a FFP scope, the mil dots are correct at every power setting. On a SFP scope the mil dots are only correct at one power setting. That one setting is set by the scope manufacturer. Most will make it the scopes highest power, ie a 3.5 x 15 niteforce is correct at 15x. Others will just use whatever power they want. For example, many Nikons mill correctly at 12x even though the scope goes to 14 or 18x.

                  PS: Have you checked out www.caprc.com forums? There is a whole section on scopes for precision/tactical shooting, all which have some sort of mil or moa reticle.

                    Here's what I did to verify: I stuck a 3' length of tape on a telephone pole that I knew was 100 yards away. When the height of the reticle matched that 3' length of tape, I knew I was at the correct magnification to range with it.

                      I have the midot master booklet and while I haven't read it yet it looks like it has some very good info. I got mine free with my Buckmaster scope. I did have to send away for it though. I think you can buy them if I' am not mistaken.
