    Lapping Necessary Mounts/Glass same Make?

    Hello-

Wanted to get some opinions from others here on the utility of lapping when the make of the scope and mount are the same?

Currently I am using an Trijicon Accupoint 5x20 with a Trijicon QR mount. While I did buy a Wheeler Lapping kit, I have read that lapping is always a great thing to do, but not always necessary.

Has anyone here skipped lapping and had success when using the same make on both?

The manufacturer being the same for both the rings and scope have nothing to do with it, makes no difference at all.

The purpose of lapping rings is to remove manufacturing defects from the internal diameter of the scope rings so they provide more surface area and a more consistent surface area in holding the scope tube in place.

Now having said that, there is honestly no real need to lap the rings of a quality manufacturer as they will have removed those burrs along the edges, and used sharp cutting tools at the proper feeds and speeds to provide a good surface finish in the first place.

I have owned 3 or 4 sets of badger ordnance rings over the years, none of them required anything more than cleaning off of the shipping grease.

An easy, and not so scientific test to determine if your rings need to be lapped (my money is on that they don't) is run your finger along the edges of the internal diameter, if it feel sharp, like it could cut you and or have rough spots, then a light lapping might help, or if running your finger over the surface of the rings where the scope sits, and it feels bumpy, then yeah, lap it, otherwise mount it all up and go shoot.

    Hope that helps.

      Rero-

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I just did the "Tests" you suggested and they passed with high marks.

      Thanks
