What power scope for a .308 bolt?

Just wondering what power scope you folks are using on a .308. I will mainly be punching paper out to 200 yards but would like to use it for hunting if and when the time arises. Thanks for your help.

For what you described, a 3.5-10 variable would work fine for you. For hunting, you should get a variable that doesn't go above 4 power at it's lowest setting. 10 power will get you past 200 yards easily for target shooting.

I was planning on pairing it with a Redfield Revolution 4-12X40 like I have on my .270. I have 5-6 Redfields and have won me over. I have Bushnell Elites and Leupold's but the Redfields can't be beat for price.

Redfield Revolutions are great, I have the 4-12x40 on a 300 Win Mag with no complaints; I also have one on my Savage .270 also and you can't beat the scope for the price especially when you find deals on samplelist.com

Nikon has a great 2.5-10x42 that can also work well for you. Something that goes down to 3x will be extremely useful for shots under 100 yards.

Jacob Bynum from Rifles Only said it best. There have been more people and animals shot with scopes in the 3-9x range than any other. So, don't think you need to over do it on the magnification.

I would look at a 2.5-10x or 4-16x Votex PST Viper from CS Tactical. Mike is a Calgunner and located not too far of a drive north of you and will do everything he can to get you what you're looking for. I say keep California dollars within the state as much as possible.

No offense, but if you are only shooting out to 200 yards, why are you using a .308? I love the .308 and think its a pretty darn good general purpose round, but there are plenty of smaller, cheaper, lower recoiling rounds that will shoot just fine out to 200 yards and take game just fine.

But, with that said, i have a USO SN-3 TPAL 5-25 on my .308, but I also almost never shoot it at ranges shorter than 400 yards.

Basically it's because that's the longest range I have in my area. I typically shoot my .22 and .223's but I have to site it in and have it ready. Does that make sense?

Sure it makes sense. Plus as you originally posted, you certainly want a .308 if you are going hunting out to 200 yards. I don't think a .22 or .223 is a very effective hunting round for the average hunter at 200 yards.

A 3-9x40 is perfectly adequate. 4-12x is slightly better if you can get one at about the same price.

Fix power scopes for me.

I'm a big fan of fixed power scopes. I use a Weaver 6X42mm on my AR10. Fixed power scopes are usually brighter than variable power scopes (until you hit the big money) and have less moving parts, ie, less to go wrong. Plus, unless you pay big money, variable power scopes may change POI when you change the power setting. Unless you are using your 308 to shoot small ground squirrels at 200 yards, a 6 power scope should work. Remember, the higher the power the more narrow the field of view. This could be an issue while hunting. That Weaver scope goes for about $135.00-140.00 on Amazon.com. Just my opinion.
