Not sure if this belongs in this section or not but I could not find a light section

Im looking for a light/laser for my AR15 and dont want to spend a lot of money on a streamlight TLR-2s, is there anything out there that is comparable to that?

not really. The TLR-2 is about the least-expensive light/laser I would ever consider. all the other stuff is just crap. From there, you can go with a X400 but thats even more expensive.

just curious, but why do you need a laser? a good quality light is all thats really needed.

the only thing similar to the TLR-1 with a quick(er) release would be the Surefire X300, but its about $275.

A proven, simple and inexpensive weapon light & mount is the VTAC/Surefire G2 led combo. $108

If you don't need the laser, the TLR-1s is a good choice. The "s" indicates the strobe feature.

I've always liked buying lights and lasers separately, like stereo components. That way, if one craps out, I don;t have to replace both at once, and I can either combine them on one firearm, or split them up - light on the AR, laser on the handgun.

Visit candle power forums, there are plent of high end weapons grade flashlights besides surefire.

Picking a light depends on application as well.

My big boys
I use an Olight M3X on my long range AR, throws out to 300 yards easy. at 100-200 yards it looks like daylight in my scope.
M30 can fill up a large room with a wall of light

Another tid bit of information.. shopping on lumens alone can be a big mistake...

Lumens vs Lux

If you want a compact thrower search for a light with a Cree R2 LED, they tend to throw better than its brighter R5 brother. R5 generally has more lumen output but less lux on target using a similar reflector.

Cree XM-L light are the craze right now, very popular and bright, but since the emitter led is so much larger, it turns compact lights into bright flood lights. You need a decent size head to get some throw out of an XM-L.

I think the Malstrom G5 is a great weapon light for an AR, excellent throw, not too big, internal battery contacts are 2 sided solid spring to help with shock and recoil...

+1 for TLR-1s if anyones posyed that suggestion so far. It's really the cheapest, easiest decent light you can get for an EBR imo.

you're not gonna find what you are looking for for under $100.

For laser/light combo look at iTac WLL1 (they make the same light re-branded for Sig Sauer) - can be found for $150-$200.

For quick release, look into Insight WX150, its a great light... I have one on my S&W M&P .45 and will get another for shotgun, it's a little more than the itac at $175-$200 (contemplating the iTac for shotgun but I dont really care about the laser)...

Both lights get great reviews - I have an iTac holster and trust that their lights are quality as well (no doubt they are if Sig uses them)... I can tell you first hand the Insight is a very good light.

I pickied up a Viking rail flashlight mount. If you don't have a rail system, there are front site rails that you can install. These run about $20.


I have an old Surefire G2 Nitrolon (about $30-35) and purchased a Lighthound.com drop in LED that outputs 340 lumens ($17).

For about $75 you can have a 340 lumen light for your AR.
