Hmmm didn't think about that, that's a good point 0_o
BTW saw your article on Mil vs MOA, very helpful thanks.

Also from your suggestion, I'm guessing I should avoid getting a cantilevered mount given the scope and the size of my rifle?

I'm glad the MIL vs MOA helped you.

As for the mount for an AR I would recommend getting a cantilevered mount.

IOR 3-18 is what I have on my 16". It's about a half pound too heavy for my taste but other than that it works great.

For under 1k my list would be PST 6-24 if you want higher mag or super sniper 3-9 / leupold M3 if you want lower magnification.

For the under 1k price, what is the best choices:

            Vortex PST 6-24
            Weaver new tactical 6-24
            6500 ELITE
            Sightron SII

            Anymore?

The Weaver Tactical scopes are nice. I like the Vortex PST more. We also stock the Weaver Tactical scopes but we need to add them to the website.

In the under $300.00 catagory, there is the BSA 4-14x44 FFP Tactical from Midway. I'm going with one of these, at least initially, on my DPMS based 18" 308 build. It's actually a really decent scope despite the BSA branding. 26.5 mils (about 95 moa) of internal elevation adjustment is enough to get a 308 out to 1000 yards easily even with a non inclined 0 moa mount. The reticle design is an extended mil setup with hash marks instead of dots, another plus for long range work. Windage and elevation adjustments operate smoothly, but the clicks could stand to be a little more distinct, they are a bit soft but have very little slop or backlash. Glass is pretty decent. Hard to tell without a side by side comparison with other scopes, but I know it's definitely clearer than the Bushnell 3200 series 10X40 mil dot tactical, but definitely not as clear as Nightforce Worth looking into for budget minded optics on a long range rig.
