I searched and still need help choosing a scope!

I read several posts but most still leave me with questions so here I go.

Need to choose a scope for:
    *Remington 700 XCR, .308, Tac, 26" barrel
*Range: 600, then 800 and yes, 1,000 yds
*Goal: Plinking tight groups on paper and learning more about this stuff
    *Budget: < $300

Ok, please offer suggestions with these constraints. Thanks for the help!

Your budget is the limiting factor. Most going out to 600, 800, and 1000 with tight groups are spending 8 times as much.

      Some options under $300:

      Bushnell Elite 3200 10x
      A Vortex Viper
      Fixed 10x Super Sniper
      Fixed 16x Super Sniper

All of the scopes above have proven to be reliable without sacrificing too many features.

Well realistically, for a beginner to buy a $2400 scope, I think is a poor judgment. Marine/Army snipers, training to protect lives, don't start on that level of equipment.

Let me recalibrate here. Since I'll be shooting at Angeles, scratch the 1,000 (I was dreaming a bit). The max target, I believe, is at about 800 yds.

So, let me restate the range at 400yds-800yds and see if i can get a variable scope.

Thanks, Jon Se. Very good options. Any variable suggestions....let's say, <$400 that's appropriate for 400yds-800yds?

These three have more features at the same price point (~$300) however don't seem to be as well reviewed (with the exception of the first). You should also be concerned of the elevation adjustment range when looking for a scope for that distance.

            Bushnell 4200 4-16x - May need a 20 MOA Rail
            Millett TRS-1
            Falcon Menace

You may also be able to get a hold of a Sightron SII BigSky scope for around that range.

You can also refer to this scale for a rough comparison of the general quality of scopes

$300 isn't gonna get you much of a new scope. Look for used ones with life time warrantee. Search the forums for a good used one.

Millett TRS is pretty good. I bought a used TRS-1 for $250 with tactical rings. Put in on my friend's Savage LRH in 6.5-284 and he shot .1"+ and .2" 3-shot groups with it. the Mil-DotBar recticle is great.

Super Snipers are nice too. the ones with eye-piece mounted parallex adjustment/focus is cheaper and work just fine. Since you plan on shooting 1000 yards, I think a fixed 16x one is best for you.

I had too many bad experiences with cheapo Bushnell so I can't recommend it. I haven't had a Falcon or Vortex so can't say anything about them.

Check out www.samplelist.com; they have some really good deals for slightly used demo model scopes. I bought a Redfield 4-12x40 for 159.00.

I could be wrong, but don't all of these scopes have fixed parallax?

More like a little over 10x as much. And yes you can shoot tight groups with those scopes. I'm presuming they will shoot tight groups at 1000 yards no problem, but since our range only goes to 800 yards I have not shot at 1000 yards.

Really good scopes will often cost more than the rifle.
