whats your budget... there are boatloads of options

decent quality for reasonable price are Lucid HD7 and Vortex Sparc... the Lucid is quite a bit bigger (and heavier) - the Vortex is smaller but has modular risers so you can vary the height... I have one on an AK variant so its at its lowest, on an AR you'd probably use the highest mount (they are all interchangeable)...

The 2X magnifier for the Sparc is crap - the HD7's is pretty good... Lucid also has a 2x-5x variable magnifier that is pretty good too. The RDS themselves are both real good for the price!

I have the two mentioned - but lot's of people like Primary Arms RDS (real good reviews)...

anything cheaper I dont think it's gonna matter much - Bushnell Trophy series seems to get decent reviews... Tru Glow, Tasco, etc are all cheap - but you get what you pay for.

I am trying to stay under $100 but if the one Jeep7081 mentioned is the best "bang for my buck" then I really don't mind the extra $49...but I'm not really looking for a laser

                  Considered a "red dot?"
I have this on my Ruger 10/22. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=535901 It has very good reviews and don't let the price fool you, its a pretty high quality item. I use it for 50yds with no problem.

If you need to cowitness then get this, http://www.primaryarms.com/product.s...categoryId=419 you'll need a mount though so a little over $100 but I have it on my AR.

It would help to know what king of shooting you are doing. Are you target shooting? Plinking? Hunting?

In a fixed 4x for hunting,

In a variable, if you're willing to go a little higher, the Nikon Prostaff has a BDC (Bullet Drop Compensating) reticle specifically for a .22LR.

Decent red dots around $100 are http://www.opticsplanet.net/tasco-pr...e-pdts132.html

A bonus of the Strikefire is that it comes with a 30mm extra-high ring.

All optics on a flat top AR, no matter what objective lens diameter, use extra-high rings.

Because the barrel is parallel with the stock, and the original rifle design had the sights in the carry handle, it is necessary to use the extra-high rings so that you can see through the scope - otherwise, you cannot get your eye low enough to see through the sight. A traditional rifle has a "drop" to the stock comb, and can use much lower rings, but on a flat top AR, it's extra-high.

The $99 Firefield photo in an earlier post shows an optic on top of a carry handle - that's mighty high, and you're not going to get a cheek weld out of that. That scope could be mounted on a flat top, but illuminated mildot reticles and lasers at $100 mean they are skimping on the optics.

For example, a $100 4x fixed power optic, all things being equal, is going to have better glass and coatings than a $100 3-9x40 with an illuminated reticle. Your money is going to lens quality and coatings, and not to bells and whistles.

My honest opinion, take it for what its worth:

I'd rather stick with irons and save my pennies a little longer to afford a better quality, well known, American made scope. I refuse on principle to give money to Chinese scope manufacturers who do nothing but churn out cheap imitation crap of other companies scopes.

I also believe in the buy once, cry once policy, learned that one the hard way. I would rather spend a few hundred on something that I know will withstand the recoil of the weapon and any other I may put the scope on at a later date (many of my scopes have been mounted on numerous rifles) will have clear, distortion free glass, accurate reticle markings, adjustments that will track properly and will return to zero every single time than spend a few bucks on a scope only to have it frustrate me by not being accurate, not have a solid and repeatable zero and break after a short period of time.

I'm not saying you should drop 1K+ on a USO, NF, S&B, but there are tons of non Chinese fake options out there that are sub 500 bucks that will serve you much better in the long run. When I was going thru college and living off campus I cut my weekly grocery bills in half (still ate healthy and enough) for a semester so I could afford a USO, I know thats a bit of an extreme example, but it shows what a little patience, fiscal restraint and creativity can result in.
