    Vortex Viper HS

I think I'm gonna buy this scope http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/...dc-moa-reticle

I'm going to put it on my Browning A Bolt 7mm WSM. I use the gun primarily for elk hunting. But I also shoot that gun for fun also at the range or when I go camping. I have a 9x scope on it now which works fine for me but id like something with a little more zoom.

So my main question is I know it's a good scope and I seen them for about $550ish is there a better scope out there for the $$..?

And my next question is with the Dead Hold BDC reticle will the dots drown out say a 12" target on 16x zoom at 5-600 yards.?

    Thanks

I'm kinda new to this tactical long range type shooting if that's what you wanna call it. I been reading about first and second focal plane scopes. I interpret FFP as being better and more precise and the gaps in-between the dots on the hold over will always be the same measurement if that's the case how would you calculate hold over on different zoom settings with SFP..?

Only person I know with a Vortex didn't like it. It was one of the red dot scopes and had a problem with the switch. Turned on and off randomly.

I have a pair of Vortex binoculars that work fine though. I know an optics guy so I've got the hookup with dealer pricing.

If you are looking to spend that much, step up to Vortexs' pst line. FFP, 2moa hash mark reticle it comes mil/mil or moa/moa, illum, all the bells and whisltes. I have one in 6-24, been using it for close to 10months now, and it flat holds up, tracks well, returns to zero everytime, decent reticle, the glass is what I would expect/maybe more, from a scope @ this price point. It deffinetly not uso or s&b, but its clear enough, I have no problem identyfing target past 1600yds, (not that Im shooting that far). I dont baby my guns/scope, the get thrown over my back and drug through brush, through dust/mud, water, and snow. If it was gonna fail, it woulda done it by now, Im not easy on it.

On the bdc reticles, you dont want them. Because what the bdc for a bullet in one gun, is gonna be different in the next. Get a reticle that is mil or moa, with matching turrets ie mil/mil, moa/moa like the pst. Moa being 1.047" @ 100yds, and extends from their, ie 2.096 @ 200, 3.141 @ 300. That way, you can learn your dope, and 300 yds with a 308 is 4.3 moa with a 100yd zero, with the moa reticle, you can just hold (assuming you are shooting a ffp scope, or if its sfp, you are on the correct mag). Misses, are a lot easier to correct for, see your impact and hold, or dial the moa without doing any math on the fly.

Vortex is going to be a big hitter real quick. I would like to sell my pst and get a razor.
