Savage 99 - mount and scope suggestions

I want to do the gun proper, but I'm limited to no more than $200 with mount rings and scope. This is a Savage 99 lever action. circa 1959ish. Has screws hole for the following type of base.

Starting with the base, and considering my budget, There is a Leupold base or a Weaver base. Which gives me more options, or does it even matter since only the rings need to be comparable with the base.

Then, which rings will give me the right standoff from the rifle.

Lastly (and probably should be considered first) which scope in the 4-14x40 or 50 can stay in my price range and still get me out 300 yards or so. Is that reasonable for a savage 300? I'm stuck with the 150 gm bullet in reloads since pretty much everything else is nonexistent.

I'm sure there are some no-name scopes out there trying to make a name for themselves. I found plenty in my price range, but I need to have the whole package that works together. Hopefully someone else has been thru this and can give me some suggestions. Expecially on the base and ring.

Are you hunting or just target shooting? I recommend the Nikon Pro-staff as they have a 4x12 and you can pick it up under your $200 max.

I've mounted scopes on a couple of Savage 99's. First off, the 4.5X14X50 is way too much scope for that rifle. The rifle may not be capable of better than 2 MOA accuracy, don't be surprised if it isn't.

I used Weaver bases (They are inexpensive and work well) and I'd suggest the new Weaver "Lever-Loc" steel rings. That's what I would use.

As far as a scope, I put a 2X7 power scope on mine. I wouldn't go bigger than a 3X9X40.

That lever gun is a great hunting rifle, not a long range precision rifle.

Thanks for the suggestions. At this point my goal is targets. That may change at some point.
I did some youtube research on weaver vs leupold bases. It would seem the weaver is a good all around choice. I'm going to do some shopping this weekend.

Weaverh k-4 or k-6 is period correct for me, I have one on each. 1 MOA is not out of the question. I have one that does it, but the other exact same one does not. Grrr

Weaver hmmm. Have to think about that. Found a picture of one on a 99. Sure looks nice. But my eyesight is crap, I need all the help I can get. Good thing I'm not in a hurry.

Well, I guess I was in a bigger hurry than I thought. I ended up buying the Nikon Prostaff that Lewdogg recommended. Looked at lots and read ALL the reviews. Good bad or otherwise, I'm sure it will work. I just hope I got the right rings.
