    20 moa base?

i am looking to get a bolt gun. i am thinking regular remington 700 (24" barrel) in 308. would like to be able to shoot 100 yrds to maybe 1000 yards (not sure if this is even possible). mostly target shooting, maybe hunting in the future. i see that there are regular bases and 20 moa bases which i guess are supposed to be better for distance? how far? does that mean that ia 20 moa base will be not as good for "closer shots"? any info and advice would help.

It gives you more "up" or elevation to work with. Most scopes can get a 100 yd zero and if not 200 should easily work. Whether or not you need a canted base depends on your rifle/caliber and how much elevation your scope has available.

If your scope shoots exactly at 0 with the adjustment in the middle of it's adjustment range with a regular base and you change to a 20MOA base it will shoot 20" high at 100 yards and you will have to adjust it down that much to hit your target. What this does is give you a large amount of upward adjusting range to reach out to 1,000 yards. Most 308 will take 45-50 MOA to reach 1,000 yards so if you have a 20 MOA base you will have more room to adjust.

Some rifle/scope combinations will have issues with 20 MOA mounts having too much angle and won't let you get a 100 yard zero. I have a gun that with a 20MOA mount and a Leupold 6.5-20X will not shoot lower than 8" above the target at 100 yards.

You can get to a grand with a 24" 308 with no problems. With my load, I'm 39 MOA to 1k. Scope is a Leupy 4.5-14x with EGW (20 moa) base and rings.

As others have said it gets you more elevation. I zero at 100 and then dial.

The MOA bases generally don't cost any more so just get one that way you just buy once.

I'd say get the standard base if you won't shoot past 600 yards very often. If you shoot 1000 and can't drive the scope up enuff, then you want a 20 MOA base. But as fjold noted, if your scope doesn't have the adjustment range you may wind up not being able to get a 100 yard zero to start with.
