Looking to buy a scope ASAP for my new AR-15. I know there are probably other post about what optics to get but new scopes are out all the time and im looking for some good advice. I will be shooting 50-300 yards. I would like something that can reach 500 yards since my AR is set up for that. What magnification should I be looking to buy? 3-9x? I really have no idea when it comes to scopes. All suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. My budget would be about $200 until I start putting some serious rounds down range.

I have this on my SPR. Works really good!
Got it for $140 on ebay. -
This is what I would put on an AR for close to 300 yard shooting.
I have a 4x on my AR and hitting steel plates to 500+ yards is no problemo.
If you really want a little more magnification this would be a good choice.
I know these are $400 but they are also great scopes.
The Nikon 1-4x with BDC reticle will also be a good choice for an AR. The BDC reticle will get you on target out to 600 yards.
Also a good choice is the Nikon 2-8x with BDC reticle
The M-223 scopes from Nikon are designed for .223 and the BDC reticle is calibrated for the 55gr round out to 600 yards.
As far as power goes, 4-5x is all you need to hit targets out to 500+, seeing target detail is another thing entirely and takes a little more power. 2-8x and 3-9x are good choices. I think 2-8x may be better overall if you only shoot past 300 occasionally. If most of your shooting will be under 300 then the 1-4x and 1.5-5x would be best choice.
Under #200 is not going to get you anything worth keeping for the long haul. You do get what you pay for in optics
