    FULL RETARD

    lol hey all,

I want to throw a cheap scope on my ar. It's a cheap scope so... How do I know what height rings to get? I am looking at the Waren Maxima. I seen the video of doing it yourself but I wouldn't mid spending $50 in Sacramento to have someone lap the rings and such stuff as they do. Any thoughts and tips?

Guess I'll go with a set of Warne 1" extra highs and call tds and justguns to ask about prices on installs to see if it's worth paying for the tools to complete or pay to have em do it.

No tools needed really here, very simple to mount a scope yourself. A scope like that Bushnell or anything in it's price range will NOT benefit from a lap-in and professional install. This scope can be mounted simply on an AR using rail mount rings without any of that high end install BS. That install routine is what you want with a top-grade precision bolt action rifle and a $2000 scope, not at this level.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a junk scope, it's just not really, really great glass. But it is absolutely fine for the money and will do what you want perfectly.

DIY (Do It Yourself) is my recommendation. You will learn a lot more, save money and you will not damage anything or hurt performance by doing a simple job yourself, just be careful and you won't hurt anything.

Buy any set of standard picatinny rail scope mounts that you like just make sure to get the correct diameter (1" or 30mm are the two general sizes). The Bushnell doesn't state what diameter tube it has so find that out first, then get a set of rings that diameter.

The correct height will depend on the size of the objective on the scope to make sure it clears the barrel or forward rail. The Bushnell has a medium/large sized objective so you want mid-rise or high-rise rings. IMHO, you typically want the center of the scope just about 2.5" above bore center and mid-rise usually get you right about there.

Next, put AR in cradle and using a level on the rail get it sitting level and lock it down. Put white card backer at about 20 feet from AR and suspend a piece of black string and hang a weight on it's end so it hangs straight up and down.

Now put scope in lower half of rings and lightly clamp top of rings so scope still turns and slides freely. Look through scope and when the vertical crosshair is exactly parallel with the black string, the scope is level with the rifle, if you didn't disturb the rifle level while doing this

Lightly tighten the screws a little bit at a time evenly on all screws until they are nice and snug but NOT heavily torqued (this will twist the tube) and make sure the scope is still level. Thats really it.

Everything else is all about finding the proper distance to your eye for the scope and adjusting the eyepiece once you get it mounted where you want it.

Conversely, if you plan on wanting to change the scope out to something else once in a while and don't want to have to re-zero the scope each time, consider getting a one-piece scope mount system. The Armalite one-piece rail mount is known to return to zero when removed and replaced.

Costs a little more, but it is worth it in the long run if you aren't leaving the scope on it all the time.

Thanks for the response Geo appreciate it bud. Ya I just wanted a scope less than $100 and that would get me to 100-200 yards hitting plates so seems enough for the job on that end. The issue was rise as you guessed. I ended up getting the Burris AR-PEPR Scope Mount. The scope was 1" with a 53mm obj. How do you go about sighting it in a bit without a bore sighter? Someone suggested taking the upper off and looking down the barrel at an object..

              PS
As a side note what do you all think about those 45 degree mounts for adding your reflex sight while keeping your scope? Seems like if it was on the right side might work not terribly bad. I didn't see any see thru's i felt would work for the irons.

Here is an answer in another thread about that very same question on how to get a scope roughly zeroed before you go to the range. Sighting down the barrel is the way to do it, BUT you need to do it right and what you need to know to do it right is in that thread.

Secondary sights are best mounted on the handguard IMHO.

Here is a pic of my 20" competition rifle with a J-Point on the handguard at 45 degrees.

Free float your barrel before even thinking of lapping your rings.

Exactly the thread I was looking at Geo lol thanks though. Might just use the H marks and pull the scope off when not at the range. We'll see I guess. I was hoping to have enough space left on the rail to mount it before the scope but that thing looks awful big lol 12" I think.

As for the free float not gonna happen dude. The cost would be about 220 bucks or something as it's not set up for free float. Besides if I was gonna do that I'd just get a 24" BB upper for $700. That's probably what's gonna happen in the future as I get more comfortable shooting a long gun. Right now this one should be fine for hitting plates out to 200 yards.

Thanks for the replies though fellas any other thoughts don't hesitate to chime in.

Done setting it up awhile ago just got tired of some of the tards on this site so have not been here lately. Guy I bought it from here had the FCG messed up maybe why it was so cheap so I put a SD3G in it with the Bushnell Banner scope, the Burris P.E.P.R. and a nice metal tripod that was pretty cheap from UTG. I also have a reflex running Troy BUIS at 1/3 that I swap out for close work. I have had it out to Sac Valley a few times and to BLM spot to do some shorter distances without any issues after dealing with the lame FCG problem. She shoots good for the price at least for my taste.
