4moa vs. 7 moa red dot

I'm looking to put a Trijicon RMR reddot on my DE .50AE and am on the fence about which reticle to go with.

Can anyone tell me what the effective ranges of these two options are? Would the 7moa red dot be accurate enough to 100m for hunting purposes?

7moa @ 100 yards is alot of coverage. Personaly I dont even like 4, I prefer either a recticle with a 1 moa dot, or just a 2moa dot at that distance.

thanks for confirming. I was thinking the same thing, but it's an extra $100 plus for the 4 moa option so just wanted to make sure that's the route I want to go.

Didn't realize this was for handgun, but I think same idea holds true.

7 might work on an Elephant, 4 on a large moose, but neither are apt to give a kill shot.

well, after poking around, i ended up going with a Sightron setup.

I've had good luck with their SIII line of scopes and it seems to give me everything I'm looking for at a fraction of the cost. Even answered all my moa/reticle questions to boot :-)

I'm running 7moa trijicon rmr's on my glock pistols milled into slide 7''@100 yd is great for a pistol,4moa is too small for fast acquestion on target

i may end up getting the RMR anyway if i don't like this one but with the price and lifetime warranty, figure at worst, I can put the sightron on my 22/45. what i like about it is that it gives you a 1,2,4, & 8 moa option. nice!

                  So much misinformation.

The size of the dot has nothing to do with accuracy. A firearm and shooter capable of shooting 1 MOA at 100 yards will still shoot 1 MOA at 100 yards with a 7 MOA dot.

Yes the dot will cover more of the target...if that's an issue for what you're shooting, use the top of the dot as an aiming point rather than centering the dot on the target. Shooting groups is a matter of consistency, not the size of the dot.

2moa Aimpoint would be a great setup on a DE just because of the recoil alone. If you want something cheap that you could flip here on the boards, check out a primary arms sight just to see if you even like having a red dot on there. I tried an Ultradot out on my super redhawk and really didn't like it even at 3 MOA. I just didn't feel accurate with it and could group much better at 50+ yards with irons and a long sight radius than I could with a red dot setup. Your choice though.

That's on me...i probably should have opened the discussion that way, but I don't have alot of experience with red dots. I like the idea of having a big dot and a small dot to work with in both close quarters for target acquisition, and at distance for precise shot placement. Using the top of the dot is good advice and much appreciated!!!
