    Advice on mounting a scope?

I am trying to mount a Barska scope (4-16x50) on my savage 10... Any advice as far as the best method for doing it STRAIGHT? The scope I had on it before, I had a hell of a time trying to make it level. I don't have any kind of rifle vice/stand... is the best way just using bubble levels and torque wrenches? or any other tips&tricks?

I should add it is going on a picattiny style mount. Thanks!

Contact me and we can gettogether and lap the rings and mount it then if you want go to the range and shoot it. You have a nice rifle but a POS scope but to each his own

Hit me a PM and I'll send you my phone number and I'll walk you through the process - a little too complicated to type

If you have a one piece base then its simple (provided the base is mounted properly and the bottom of the scope is actually 100% perpindicular with the up/down line of the reticle)

All you need is a set or two of metal shims (depending on how high you are mounting the scope) What you do is place the correct amount of shims on top of the base in the middle under the portion of the scope where the turrets are, place scope on top, setting proper eye relief, and tighen down rings. Done. Then head to the range to zero and conduct a box test to confirm everything is nice and kosher.

However with a Barska, this method may work, probably wont. your other bet is to use a boresighting collimeter like http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=6...CLE_INSTRUMENT This will align your reticle with the bore without worry if the scope is made perfectly or if the base is level.

How do you guys torque down the scope rings without rotating the scope? Ive tried like 30 times and the scope keeps rotating. With very slow turns criss crossed.

I have a pri steel base n rings on a leupold vxii

Umm...I've never encountered that problem before, do you have the bottom halves tighened down on the base first? If not that would help I would imagine, also try the metal shim method, thats how I've been doing it for the past few years ever since I learned of it over on SH.

The shim thing doesnt work on my leupold because the turret box is slanted. And yes i do mount the rings first. I went by ar15barrels mount guide(which is pretty damn straight forward), but jeez i cant keep the darn sope from rotating when tighting the screws to the rings.

Each ring has 4 screws. I Usually tighten the rear first a little. Screwing each little by little in a star like pattern keeping the ring gap leveled. Then i start to tighten the front. Then i go back to the rear for more tighting. Then front...and so on untill the screw do not turn much anymore. Usually towards the end of all the back n forth turning of screw the damn scope rotates.

Tighten the screws like you do on a wheel or valve cover - in rotation. Also set you scope's reticle slightly to the offset of the side you'll tighten last. Normally I end up with the last tightening on the forward and rear ring's right front screw so I off set a little to the left. Trial and error and practice.

I mount or remount many scopes on any given weekend while working at the range. Maybe someday I'll make an instructional video.

I doubt that the scope is rotating. I suspect that the scope is flexing as you pull everything down onto the mounted ring bottoms and what you see when you look down the scope (through it or along the side) is the result of that flex. Basically, your base and/or lower ring halves aren't straight. You should set them up with a solid 1" steel/aluminum bar in place of the scope, and not even think about mounting the scope until the rings evenly rub off sharpie ink from the bar.
