Help me choose a scope

Hello, looking for input on some scopes.

Rifle it is going on is a Remington 700 .308 ADL varmint, 26" bbl, will prob upgrade the stock in a year or so, may cut down the bbl in the future to something not so long (I am aware of the pros and cons of this) also.

Anyways looking to get a scope that will be good enough for some decent ranged shooting and hunting. I prefer mildot reticles because I have used them in the past. Also, I prefer variable power scopes.

Not really looking at shooting competition or anything crazy like that, so I really do not see the need for a NF or USO or the likes...

Scopes I was looking at are:

Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 SF Mildot
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 SF Mildot
Bushnell Elite 3200 series (not really narrowed down to a model, but have seen lots of recommendations on these).
Millet (don't know much about these)...

Anyways, trying to keep the scope sub $500, preferably sub $400. Was really leaning towards the Monarch because I know and trust the Nikon name, but hear that there are limited adjustments in these, which might not work out too good when looking at shooting a long distance.


What say ye?



Extra credit- suggest me some rings (decent price). Also, what is the advantage to a 1 piece scope base vs a 2 piece? Rifle came with Leupold 2 piece.........

for hunting you dont need high magnification optics stay away from millet and elite 3200.vortex looks good monarch is ok but you can get ziess conquest for 500.00 you will never look back 3.5x10x50 glass is so good you will see your targets at 1000 yards better then high power monarch or vortex the glass is more inportant trust me been there done that

+ 1 on the Conquest - outstanding glass, good internals - but it will be out of your budget if you really want to stick with high magnification. I would stay away from Millet and from the 3200 (very poor CS on the 3200 btw).

The Monarch is definitely a good line, with a good warranty, better than the Buckmaster. Vortex Viper is also good, probably same quality glass, great warranty, but a shorter track record of course. While I have a lot of Viper glass, in your case I would pick the Monarch. If you use your rifle as a varminter at up to 300-400 yard range, you will have no problem with the adjustments, which should give you about 500-550 yards or so for the 308 ballistics (back of the envelope calculation - you can calculate it with an online ballistic calculator to double check).

Millett...Great price, great features, built solid.
This was done sighting in an M700 SPS in 308. Let's just say that the groups are very tight and the scope out shoots me.

I would also highly recommend scott at Libertyoptics.com and also why no Leupold in the mix. You can get some really decent glass for the money. I would go Nikon or Leupold for your intended purposes. A used Leupold with the Varmint reticle would be an ideal longer range setup for you for sniping those digger squirrels or whatever it may be with a .308. Good luck with your decision.

Oh, I would also take a good look at the Nikko-Stirling scopes. The nighteater series is a solid runner and their target series have some great glass, side focus, mil-dot if thats what you're looking for and I believe they will make custom target turrets.

Lots of recommendations already, but I figure I'll put in my $.02 also.

While lots and lots of people who would recommend a scope usually recommends a Leupold, I'm one of those who just don't. Can't go wrong with a Leupold, but let's just say my eyes have been spoiled, so I just don't feel right recommending a Leupold. For the price of a Leupold, you can find a Burris that is same or better quality for less.

With that said, I agree that a Zeiss Conquest is a great scope. If your wallet can manage it, I say go with that. I would go with a Zeiss if I hadn't seen a Vortex Viper. I recently looked through a Viper and would say, for the price, the Viper is a damned good scope.

The Monarch is very hard to beat for the money. I too like the zeis but much more money than the nikon. I also have had a couple of the Pentax light seekers with great results. I would stay away from the nikon buckmaster if you can get a nikon monarch, the monarch has far better glass.
